Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show Wednesday Oct. 2nd 1918 We got paid today, my first pay day in the army I drew 38.20 for two months of mighty hard work. It sure looked good to me and was quite welcome Had a letter from Lee today telling me all the news from Lewis. We are still hearing rumors of leaving here; they say now it will be between now and the 15th. The rainy season begins soon so I guess we wont be here long. I started out telling of our trip to Golden Gate Park It certainly is the most wonderful park I ever hope to be in. The trees lawns flowers etc. are all so beautiful and the park is so 22 10-2-18 so large a scale that it makes one think he has wandered into paradise. We spent some time walking around then went thru the museum. Here, the relics and curious things there interested me so that Curley had to almost drag me away. I want to always remember the old furniture of the time of Louis XIV and the weapons of war, suits of armor of about the same period also the Egyptian mummies and the Asyrian Gods of biblical times. There is also the skeleton of an enormous whale, 85 feet long. I want to go back there sometime and see more of that park as it certainly is worth seeing more of. We also went down |
