Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show Saturday Feb 8th 1919 Havent had anything to write about so have let my journal sort of drag along Was down to Brest last Monday Feb 3rd, and Gray Herrick & I went out to the New Battleship USS New Meixco Very interesting try 612 ft long 125 wide Some ship Also went down along the dry docks where a large number of German Submarines are lying and saw the U-139 which sank the Lusitania. Also got a lot of mail from the Company, from home, from Lee & Mowbray but none from shorthand Got one last night dated Jan 19th all I’ll get this month I guess. Well I can slow up too thats one comfort Im to be made a Corporal in M. Company soon from what I hear. Its alright, but I’d just as soon ahve stayed a Private 1 Cl. and go home More rumors today but I don’t pay any attention to them now I sure was homesick last night and Bonnie’s letter didn’t Cheer me up any either I work quite late at nights now and rise late in the morning Feb. 12th Am now a Corporal and will wear a chevron as soon as can get one Gee but I had the blues the night of the 7th and I dont know why shorthand I was shorthand Wonder when we’ll get some more mail I don’t feel at all good and I think I’m a little homesick for the first time. Working like the devil too. |
