Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show to Brest for Guard Duty and theres no saying when they’ll be sent home. We are still on duty at the Billeting Office and I’m firmly Established as the Captain’s own Stenographer I’m glad I have the position as it makes the time pass quicker Two days more and it will be Christmas, but I guess I’ll work as usual. The 8th had pay day yesterday but I didn’t get mine but suppose I’ll get it later on if they can send it here or let one of us go down for it. I’d like to spend a few hours and a few Francs in Brest getting a bath and a good meal if there’s such a thing in France. Dec 26th 1918 (Day after Xmas Christmas has passed again, and for the first time in my life I’ve been away from home on that day and I felt quite blue for awhile but a little work on the typewriter soon cheered me up. The fellows in the tent where I sleep here, next the Billeting Office, sent Gray thru the Commisary line and he got a lot of candy, and nuts for us so it wasn’t so bad, Gray Lonanger & I are going down town Saturday to get paid and spend the day in Brest. Our Captain is sure a dandy fine man, worrying for fear we work too hard in the office here I was awakened this |
