| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show Nov 24th 1918 We resumed drill again the day after we arrived. I drilled only half a day, then Lunt Fogel the Int. officer sent for me and I was detailed with Much of G.Co. to make a map of the town. We’ve been working on it now two days but dont know whether well finish it or not as we are going back to Brest Early this week. I sure hope its to go aboard a transport for home. Had shorthand Wednesday and it sure was fine The only letter Ive received over here There’s more somewhere but they are sure slow when it comes to delivering mail When I re-write this journal I’m going to put into it some descriptions of the French people, their habits and customs that Ive seen but it would take too long now. Wonder when I’ll get a bath I havent had one since leaving Camp Mills over a month ago Tuesday Nov. 26th 1918 Raining to beat the band today, so no drill. I finished my work on the map of the town and reluctantly left headquarters, as its quite nice and cozy up there It seems almost certain that were going back to the states taking the train today or tomorrow for Brest and go aboard the transport Sunday sailing Monday.
