| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show Same Day 5:10 PM Well we’ve passed Salt Lake and are now past American Fork on our way to Denver. We left the train at Salt Lake marched up 4th South to State, north to 2nd South then back down to the Depot. Saw no one I knew. We fell out for a few minutes and I tried to call up home but Long Distance couldn’t get the call thru before the bugle blew so I missed it Seemed good to see Salt Lake again but I wish we’d gone by Ogden & Green River Monday Oct 21st 1918 We are today slowly making our way thru the Rockies. Reached Grand Junction early this morning and make good time to 28 Glenwood Springs where we were taken from the train and marched thru the muddy streets very pretty little place. The scenery all along is very beautiful Mountains, valleys trees streams all so wonderfully intermingled as to make one Exclaim “The Heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth His handiwork” We are now about 200 miles from Denver and will probably be there some time tonight Dad sent me a wire at Provo yesterday telling me all were well at home I feel better now than I have for some time and I can now really Enjoy the trip. |
