| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show says I may be made a Corporal by the first of the year and it looks as if we’ve booked for a indefinite stay as were listed as permanent troops. That of course might be changed over night but still I’m not looking for a move homeward for some time Had no mail for over a week. Wish they’d hurry it up as I want some more letters and I know there’s some for me Wish I had my Christmas box There’s a lot of talk of our being up nearer to the front line but I hope its bull I don’t want to move from here now till we go home No more Box car rides. Wed. Dec. 18th 1918. Nothing to write about today except that its raining again (or yet.) I’m getting a little on to the work in the Captain’s Office and its sure some snap. I stay in bed in the morning till 7o’clocl then Eat and go over to the office about nine Nothing much to do when I get there Either and I’d say I’m sitting on the world if we could only get our mail through We havent had any for a week and Im getting hungry for a letter from shorthand home Sunday Dec 23rd 1918 No mail yet, though Hdqrs Co men got some this AM Our Company and most of the 8th have gone down |
