Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show was quite Enjoyable and the ride itself was quite nice while those nice white beds we slept in were alone worth the trip (cost is only 2 francs) We came back at 6 o clock this morning and I get in to work by 8:30 nothing being said about the AWOL part of it It sure was a fine day. I got paid from the Company but got no mail Don’t know whats the matter but I sure do wish I could get a letter from home. Monday January 6 1919 Havent written anything this year New Years came & went the same as any other day, only it brought me a shorthand Havent had any letters from home yet. Had a new Billeting Officer in the form of one Lead Col John C Maul, He was once a suler and abused and ordered everyone around (except me) Poor Fonda. I gus on the doors Transient Captains. Our friend lasted only two days and is now on his way to the Sutures Maj Simpson of the Engineers is now in his place and seems quite a nice man. Ive sure had a busy day today and worked myself into a nervous headache Its an awful night tonight wind and rain & everything I fear for the safety of the tent and am thinking that there are a lot of boys in the tented area sleeping in the rain for this wind will sure blow their tents down. There are rumors out that Everyone is to leave this camp soon and that were to go home The 81st, 83rd & 2nd FA of our Div. went home yesterday and shorthand illegible the 25th |
