Show 9-16-‘18 I’m going to begin to give a little character sketch of the men in my tent first, then others in the Company when I want to remember in after years Clark E Morey: a lad from Seattle Washington. He is No 3 of the front rank in my squad. A good clean young fellow; High School education and a love of football. Does quite a lot of Reading I rather like him. His father died recently and he went home on a ten day furlough. He quit a job in the shipyards because the folks at home were suspicious of his being a “slacker” I think there is a girl in the case too. I shall always remember him, for the exchange of ideas I’ve had with him and his ambition to (17) succeed as a soldier. I’ll describe another tomorrow. Wednesday Sept 18th 1918 Monday night about 12:30 they roused us from our slumbers and marched us down to the drill grounds then back again, what for I dont know unless it was to see how quick we could get out. The whole proceeding took about two hours of our sleep The intelligence Squad Continues to turn out with pencil and paper we are learning making road maps and also contour making on maps It’s very hard stuff to learn We go out and draw an actual map this afternoon. I hke at five when I can do good work (over) |
