| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show Wed Dec 4th 1918. Mail call came today and Oh Boy, I got twelve letters, five of them from Bonnie and dandy letters too, two from Mother two from dad, one from Lazelle and one each from Lee and Lundy. Lee sure is sorry he didn’t come with me to Fremont as he will not get the trip across now Sometimes I think he’s lucky but oh well I would never have been satisfied if I hadn’t got this trip now I want to go back again. Wish I could get across to England and see my relatives over there but don’t know whether I’ll be able to or not The Intelligence Section has drawn the softest job in the camp. the billeting of troops coming in from the front. We are divided into groups of five and each assigned to a certain sector and are to guide the troops to their quarters as they come in Its a good job. (Boots 1 Some joke on the sotk and the New Coms. Saturday Dec 7th. 1918 The sun is shining Today for the first time since we came here. It sure looks good to me to see it too We took about 1200 men from and aircraft Battalion into our area Last night or rather this morning as I was roused at about 2:30 A.M.
