Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show On Board the Princess Motoika Friday Nov 1st 1918 Havent written in my old Journal for several days. We came on board this ship from Camp Mills on the 28th of last month sailed about two oclock in the Afternoon. I wasn’t a bit sorry to leave Camp Mills Got a dear letter from Lon before I left and wrote her the same day also ans. letters I received from Mother and dad. I rec’d a letter from Gidding too. I was seasick about two days. The second day out I got sick and rocked around deck all day wishing someone would kick me overboard and end my misery Today I’m better and am enjoying the trip a little. We are sure crowded in like cattle but I’ll get used to it I’ll not be at all sorry though when we hit land and get off this ship Oh for a letter from home. But it will be some time now before I get any mail. A sailing ship showed up this morning and one of our Sub chasers promptly rounded her up and finding she had wireless apparatus and was flying no flag took off the crew and then sunk the ship. No chance for any Submarine stuff on this trip We are too well taken care of. |
