| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show when he made the presentation of the money Theres rumors in Camp today that the war is over (and that peace has been signed) I was on Guard last night, my first shot at it Its sure a lonesome job tramping up and down in the dark 5 hrs on four off. I heard while on guard that the 13th Division from Lewis came in last night If thats true Lee and Lundy are here. Wish I knew where they are and could see them Gee things are cheap over here. 50 cents for four little apples Oh Boy. what a place I could buy a whole case for that back home Saturday Nov. 15th 1918 I’ve been on fatigue duty every day this week, and stayed in today to get shaved. Wrote two letters and guess I’ll be working tonight. on detail. I’m sure disgusted with France and now that the war is over I want to go back home soon as possible. Peace negotiations are now going on and I hope they soon start us back Fighting has ceased so I’ll never see a real battle Its enough to disgust a person to be in the army and go out to work with a pick and shovel like a dogs every day, and they don’t feed us Nothing but beans, Beans beans Im sick of Beans and Bacon illegible |
