| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show oh how they cursed at it A lot of rumors came in from the States Yesterday most of them bring a bunch of toughs I couldnt help thinking of shorthand and shorthand ambition shorthand Glad I squelched it I’m hopeful today that we are going back soon as last night they were making out the Transport list for our Company It will be joy to me to get back as I’m tired of living in France the way we do and I want to get back to God’s country again. Hope I can get my job with the Amalgamated back again and start getting shorthand Sunday Dec. 8th 1918. Still on the job as a runner at Billeting Headquarters. Havent heard any more about our leaving but are still hopeful. The days pass by much the same and the chow is awful. when I get my feet in a regular place to eat again I’ll sure load up though I’m afraid I wont know how to act Pres Wilson is due to arrive at Brest on Wednesday I’d like to be part of the bunch thats to be sent to meet him. No such luck I guess. |
