Show The Flags Birthday We meet to celebrate Flag Day because this flag which we honor and under which we serve is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. Woodrow Wilson. Who meets to celebrate Flag Day nowadays. The occasions are far too few. Some patriotic organizations may hold commemorative rites, and some citizens may display the Stars and Stripes, but generally the anniversary is barely noticed. This is both regrettable and surprising. It is hardly in keeping with American patriotism to pass up an opportunity to honor the flag, yet unfortunately this happens far too frequently. June 14 is the birthday of the national emblem. On that day in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution providing for a flag of red and white stripes and a blue field with white stars. The first flag had 13 stars, but over the years, as the nation expanded, new ones were added until the present flag, with its 48 stars, was fixed by executive decree on June 24, 1912, following the admission of Arizona and New Mexico into the union. Perhaps it is the date of Flag Day which keeps it from being better observed. June 14 occurs after the school year has ended. If Flag Day could be observed while pupils were still in classes, it might be a much greater success. School children are intensely interested in the story of their country and its institutions, and if that story can be told in the classroom, so much the better. The older folk, however, have no excuse whatever for not doing their part better. If Flag Day is worth observing, it is worth observing well. So, we say, put out the flag today. See that it is displayed properly and wherever possible. And more important, take the time to think of the flag and its meaning of its history and the proud position it must occupy in every loyal thought. Flag day its Birthday 1777. Monday June 14, 1954.
