Show THE OGDEN (UTAH) STANDARD EXAMINERTHURSDAY EVENING, JANUARY 7, 1954Death Takes Mrs. E. I. Rich, Church and Civic WorkerMrs. Emily Almira Cozzens Rich, 82, 2624 Taylor Ave., wife of Dr. Edward I. Rich, physician and surgeon of Ogden, died yesterday in the Dee Hospital after a short illness.Mrs. Rich devoted much of her time to LDS Church work and civic activities. In 1914 she was appointed secretary of the Fifth Ward Relief Society where she served until released to become counselor in the Weber Stake Relief Society. She held this position until June 25, 1922, when she was appointed president of the new Mount Ogden Stake Relief Society. She was released Sept. 27, 1936, at her request.She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and served on the state central committee as auditor, was appointed vice president of the Weber County Chapter in 1914 and president in 1922. Board MemberAt the time of her death she was an active board member of the history committee. She was instrumental in the compilation of the book, Beneath Ben Lomonds Peak, a 600 page history of Weber County from 1824 to 1900. She was a member of the FortyThird. Ward,For the past 44 years she had been a member of the Acacia Club and was a past president. During World War I she served two years on the executive board of the American Red Cross, Weber County Chapter, and had served as an executive member of the Community Chest.She was chairman of the womens division of the Federal Emergency Relief Assn. of Weber County. She served as one of the commissioners of the first Girl Scout organization in Weber County. She was a charter member and past president of the ladies auxiliary of the Weber County Medical Society. GOP Vice ChairmanShe had also served as vice chairman of the Weber County Republican Party organization.Mrs. Rich was an ardent traveler and visited extensively throughout most of North and South America and Europe.She was reared in Montpelier, Idaho, where she received her early education, later attending the Fielding Academy, Paris, Idaho.In 1888 she entered the Brig ham Young College in Logan and later taught in the public schools in Logan. She was an organ instructor and studied piano and voice.She attended the dedication of the LDS Salt Lake Temple in April, 1893.On April 9, 1894, she was married to Dr. Rich in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. The couple then moved to Ogden. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the same home in which they had lived 47 years. Born in Montpelier She was born May 7, 1871, inMrs. Emily A. C. RichMontpelier, Idaho, a daughter of John and Emily Almira Merrill Cozzens.Surviving are her husband; two sons: Dr. Junior Edward Rich, Ogden; Col. Thair C. Rich, Washington, D. C.; the following daughters: Mrs. Oertel R. Russell, Mrs. Royal (Cleone) Eccles, Mrs. Joseph W. (Myrene) Brewer, Ogden; Mrs. Junius H. (Avon) Smart, Los Angeles; Mrs. H. Taylor (Mary) Peery, Palo Alto, Calif.; 27 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; five brothers Orin Cozzens, Sacramento, Calif.; Earl Cozzens, Los Angeles; Matt Cozzens, San Gabriel, Calif.; Joseph Cozzens, Cowley, Wyo.; David Cozzens, Salt Lake City, and one sister: Mrs. Heber C. (Lucille) Hancock, Ogden.Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p. m. in the LDS Fortythird Ward chapel, 1635 26t. h St., Bishop C. LeGrande Stewart officiating.Friends may call at Lindquist and Sons Colonial Funeral Chapel, 3408 Washington Blvd., tomorrow from 6 to 8 p. m. and Saturday until 12 noon. Interment will be in Ogden City cemetery. |
