Terse Utah Steel FactsPresident Alden G. Roach of Columbia Geneva Steel helps us to know our Utah by furnishing some terse facts in his speech to the Utah Bankers Association.From Iron Mountain near Cedar City more than four million tons of iron ore were shipped in 1953, most of it to Geneva.From other mines and quarries in Utah come the coal and the limestone to be used with the ore in the production of iron and steel.From these raw materials comes a rated pig iron capacity in Utah which represents 43 per cent of total West era capacity. The rated steel ingot capacity represents 27 per cent of the total Western capacity.Production of the raw materials into iron and steel furnishes the jobs for 8, 000 Utah people with a monthly payroll of over two million dollars.Those facts and figures should be easy to remember if we read them two or three times, and then we can think of the figures in relation to the larger Western picture Mr. Roach described.Geneva functions in a region which has increased by seven and one half million persons since 1940. This is as if all New England with the exception of Connecticut had been added to the Western market.No wonder use of steel products in the West is two and one half times what it was in 1940, and how gratifying the fact that we produce in the West 70 per cent of the steel used in the West.The thing for the West to do, of course, is to strive ever harder to achieve selfsufficiency and then go on from there.With the market for Western products continuing to rise as Western population increases, no Westerner should be other than, optimistic about the future.
