Ogden Standard July 6 54. More Work in High School. Dr. Grayson Kirk. president of Columbia University, told the National Education Association last week that the traditional three Rs of reading, writing and arithmetic are not enough in this tense age. He advocated three more Rs resources, resolution and responsibility. Dr. Kirk had quite a bit to say under each of the three new Rs. With reference to resolution he explained he meant a resolution by parents and educators to demand more serious work from students, particularly in high school. We suspect there were some cheers uttered by the teachers at their convention when Dr. Kirk made his appeal for more serious work. Teachers without number bemoan the ease with which the boys and girls can slip through high school if they wish to limit their study to the minimum amount necessary. If we have an understanding public, he said, if we have better financial and human resources, if we have a tougher attitude toward the disciplinary side of mental development, we can build in this country a democratic society of educated men and women the like of which no land has yet enjoyed. Dr. Kirk helps us to understand that it is as important to produce disciplined and trained persons to be our leaders as wonder bombs to slay our foes. Thursday July 8, 1954. Hot sultry day, Cleone came up and I went home with her and had lunch with her at her home. Atty, David J. Wilson came over this evening to see Oertel about suit for injury she sustained in auto acci. I attended board meeting of the sons Utah Pioneers. Recd letter from Thair and Mary. Mary letter was from Midway Island in the Pacific. Friday July 9, 1954. Our dear daughter Cleones birthday 57 a dear girl. She has never caused us a moments trouble. She and Oertel and Myrene have gone to Salt Lake this afternoon for a little talk. Dear girls as ever. I have been home all day. Reading etc. Have thought much of my dear departed wife today and letter from Ruth Rich today.
