Shutterbugs FatherA great many people may think that George Eastman invented photography. He didnt. But by making photography simple and convenient, he helped establish a captivating hobby and a great industry which has had a profound effect on modern life.The Eastman story might easily have been written by Horatio Alger. The noted inventor was born 100 years ago today in Rochester, N. Y. When he was seven his father died and his mother took in boarders to support the family. Then at the age of 23, while working as a bank clerk, young Eastman took up photography as a hobby. Within three years he was in business for himself.Eastman developed sensitized paper and roll film and in 1888 brought out a camera (the famous Kodak) designed to use the roll film. From then on the development of the Eastman Kodak Company was spectacular. When George Eastman died in 1932 he was many times a millionaire, but more important, he had directly or indirectly given employment to hundreds of thousands and pleasure to the millions who find fascination in being shutterbugs.
