Show Ogden Hoopsters Assume Lead In Northern League Kapplemen Wallop Logan Team Before Tremendous Crowd Division Champions Outclass Touted Loganites In All Departments; Bengoschea Directs Attack; Briggs Turns In Great Game; Visitors Score Six Goals By AL WARDEN Standard-Examiner Sports Editor RIDING alone at the top of the heap, after a dazzling 38 to 19 victory over the vaunted Logan Grizzlies, the Og¬den High Tigers commanded the northern division basketball conference hoop race today. Dick Kapple's Tigers chalked up their fourth consecutive league vic¬tory and at the same time handed the Grizzlies their initial setback of the year as a capacity crowd roared its approval at the Weber gymna¬sium last night. Given the toughest assignment of the year, the Ogdenites went at their task in a hurry. Two charity tosses by Deming, another charity toss by Bengoschea, a nice side shot for two points by Norton and a setup by Aguirre gave Ogden seven points before the game was six minutes old and before Logan could break into the scoring de¬partment. Izatt, ace forward of the Logan team, and leading scorer of the northern division, broke the ice for Logan with a charity toss on a foul by Briggs. He added another charity point a few minutes later when Aguirre was called for hold¬ing. James, Logan center, caught the Ogden defense asleep and tossed in a sleeper. Ogden held a 7 to 4 advantage at the quarter and left the court at the end of the half with a 12 to 7 lead. SMOTHER RIVALS The runners-up in the state joust last season functioned like cham¬pions in the final two periods of play. They worked their offensive plays in style and covered the Lo¬ganites like a circus tent when the Grizzlies attempted to Score. With Bengoschea, Norton and Aguirre "red hot" in the scoring department, the Tigers ran their total to 29 points in the third pe¬riod with Logan collecting two charity points and a lone field goal. This same trio bombarded the hoop consistently in the early part of the final period to swell the Ti¬ger lead considerably. Coach Kapple rushed in a number of reserves in the final minutes of the game. Ogden commanded the situation at all times and turned in one of j the sweetest performances in years at the Weber gym court. Burns Crookston's Loganites had only six open shots for the hoop during the entire game. This gives one an idea of the manner in which the Tigers rushed their op¬ponents. Logan, incidentally bagged only six goals during the entire game, while Ogden collected 16. Briggs was assigned the tough task of stopping Izatt, the leagues leading scorer, and the all-state Tiger guard did himself proud. He chased Izatt all over the court with the result that the Logan ace bag¬ged only one field goal. Co-coptains Bengoschea and Norton played brilliantly. Bengoschea's all-around team play and floor capers thrilled the capacity crowd. Norton controlled the sit¬uation at center. Deming and Aguirre also sparkled with neat performances. When the Tigers put On the "pressure" they simply toyed with the touted Loganites. LEADS LOGANITES James at center for the Grizzlies led the northern team in scoring, He bagged four goals and a free throw. Bengoschea hogged the scoring honors for the Ogdenites with 13. Kapple's Tigers played inspired basketball at all stages of the game and never once did they let up with their speedy attack. The Orange Streaks just simply made things miserable for the vis¬itors. If Kapple's Tigers don't suffer from a case of "swelled heads" now they will be the team to beat at the state tournament in March. Ogden high's splendid band pro¬vided music for the occasion. Mem¬bers of the girls' pep culb enter-tained during the half. Ogden's reserve had little diffi¬culty in upsetting the four junior teams in a preliminary game. WEBER TAKES CLOSE BATTLE AT RICHMOND Preston Upsets Box Elder; South Cache Deadlocks For Second Place Weber High hoopsters nosed out the North Cache five in a closely contested northern division game at Richmond last night, 25 to 23. Last minute baskets by Wimmer and C. Ahlberg turned the trick for the Warriors. North Cache led at the quarter 8 to 4 but Weber picked up the slack and assumed a 16 to 11 lead at half time. At the end of the third period the Mark Ballif outfit held to a one point lead, 18 to 17. Wimmer, with 11 points, was outstanding for Weber. South Cache turned back Bear River, 34 to 27, in a well played game and Preston gained a 36 to 29 decision over Box Elder. South Cache is now tied with Logan for second place. Smith and Winger led the attack for the Idaho five. Carlson was high point man for South Cache and Jones topped the Bear River players in scoring. Scores: Summary: LOGAN G. T. F. P.
