Show Uintah Downs Ephraim Lads In Lively One Flashing a stronger defense and better shooting form, the Uintah Blue Devils turned back Ephraim, one of the scrappiest and hardest- working fives ever seen in high school tournament play, to win, 35 to 22, in the first evening game. The defeat drops the Sanpete district winners out of the tournament and the decisive victory for Coach Carl Davis' Uintah boys stamps them as the team to defeat for consolation honors. Both teams started strong and showed plenty of fighting. Raymond Anderson put the Blue Devils in the lead with a neat field goal and foul pitch in the early minutes of play. Alexander and Woods cor-nered field goals and the Region Five winners led at the end of the period, 9 to 2. Uintah's fast man-to-man style of play kept the Carrot Eaters from many open shots. The Vernal five ran the score to 15 to 2, with Alexander, Woods and Anderson taking turns in scoring. Lavon Christiansen, hard-working and aggressive Ephraim center, dribbled in for a setup. Uintah ran the scqre to 20 to 5 and then Alton Peterson got away for two goals shortly before the gun. Uintah led at the half, 21 to 9. Coach Davis' boys continued to work the ball in for close shots, seldom attempting a field goal from beyond the foul line. Neither five let up in the second half, but fought for every opening. Ephraim players were a little too tense and fumbled frequently. Play during the entire half was even. Uintah still had a big lead at the end of the third period, the score being 27 to 14. Each team rang up 8 points in the final eight minutes of play, but the game had already been tucked away by the Blue Devils. Raymond Anderson, forward; Harold Alexander, center, and Sterling Cook, guard, played stellar ball for the winners. Anderson led the scorers with 13 points. LaVon Christiansen and Alton Peterson were the big guns for Ephraim. Both boys played at top speed the entire game. PROVO BAGS QUEER GAME FROM NEPHI Wasps Unable to Find Hoop; Provo Pulls Through, 37-22 Provo stayed in the race for the consolation honors in the state court tournament Thursday by whipping Nephi in one of the queerest games of the meet. The final score was 37 to 22. The peculiar part of the game was that Nephi couldn't miss a shot in the first period, and then couldn't hit one the remainder of the game. Provo trailed 9-17 at the first period, but the Wasps made two field goals in the succeeding three quarters and lost the game by 15 points. M. Davis scored a goal for the Nephi team in the second quarter, but not even a foul pitch passed through the iron for the Juab squad in the third quarter. One field goal, which was in the air when the gun sounded, and a foul pitch, saved the Wasps from a shutout in the final quarter. The Nephi crew had plenty of shots, but they just would not go through the hoop. Provo, on the other hand, warmed up to its task in the second period and started raining the leather through the circle, with Mont Hoover setting the pace. The eagle- eyed Hoover dished up 19 points during the contest. The Provo squad played a fast, furious brand of ball and promise trouble for Uintah in the seminifal round of the consolation bracket Friday. Logan Cagers Pull Away in Final Period By BOB GOODELL Nosed out by Davis in the first round of championship play, Logan asserted itself Thursday as a strong contender for consolation honors by taking the measure of Salina, 40 to 28, in an interesting and well-played game. For three quarters the contest was a nip and tuck affair, but Coach Burns Crookston's charges pulled far ahead in the closing minutes. As was the case against Weber on opening day, Salina played aggressive, heads-up basketball, but the handicap of height was a big one. Roy Cooper, hustling forward, again led his team's attack with 11 points, though closely guarded, and played a fine floor game. Clyde Okerlund, captain and guard, also performed well. Logan's ace was Ray Lindquist, husky guard, who turned in spftie of the tournament's finest defen¬sive plajr. He was painfully injured shortly before the close of the gme. Dick Ryan, his running mate at guard, also played stellar ball, and Ken Cardon, sub forward, rolled in 10 points to tie with Leonard James for high scoring honors. The lead changed hands several times in the first quarter, Jensen's tail-in shot giving Salina a 10-9 edge. After Logan had gained a 13- 12 margin, Cooper led the Wolves into a 19-13 advantage, but Ryan, James and Cardon peppered the hoop to give Logan the long end of a 22-21 count at halftime. The third quarter was tight, with bas¬kets few aid far between, but the Grizzlies managed to increase their lead to three points, and the Salina defense collapsed in the final pe¬riod, Cardon and G. Peterson count¬ing heavily to give Logan a big edge. Cavemen Subdue Central, 46-29 American Fork eliminated Central high of Castle Dale from the tournament in the second game of consolation bracket, Thursday afternoon. The score was 46 to 29, the Cavemen moving far ahead after a listless first quarter. The Alpine champions played only fair basketball to chalk up their victory, Grant Hicks, a substitute forward, packing the dynamite with eight field goals, five of them sensational in the extreme. Wayne McTague, at guard, played a splendid all-around game. The Forkers utilized their height to good ad-vantage under both backboards and obviously packed too many guns for the Central boys. Central fought hard, Kay Childs playing stellar ball in the first half, while Van Jones worked well on the guard line. The first period wound up 6 to 5 for the Cavemen, but they stretched the lead to nine points at the half to take command of the situation.
