Show 465 Descendants of Charles C. Rich Aug 1954 At Reunion in LoganPossibly the largest attendance of the Charles Coulsen Rich family since the Rich Centennial Reunion of 1947 in Salt Lake City, was held at the Utah Agricultural College campus in Logan, Utah, on Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1. The 1954 reunion was under the chairmanship of LeGrande Humpherys of Logan, assisted by the Executive Council of the Rich Family, Association. Events got underway at 1 p. m. Saturday with the registering of all members at the main building. They were greeted by a reception committee under chairman J. R. Pugmire, who gave them directions, placed their food in cold storage, and outlined location of various events to follow. Registration committee, under the chairmanship of. Marilyn Rich, registered members in their respective families, which consisted of Charles Coulsen Richs six wives, and they were each given a name card identifying them. Swimming and out door sports were enjoyed by the early arrivals and at p.m. separate family meetings were held in the auditorium to elect a newCouncil Member from each family.A delicious barbecue lunch was served at 6 p. m. after which an excellent program was held in the auditorium. Special feature of the program was Rich Personalities sponsored by Emeline G. Rich family, showing slides of the Rich family and narrated by Dr. S. Grover Rich Jr. The Rich Hop immediately followed in the Union Building, complete with floor show and the Riches doing some good old fashion square dancing.Sunday morning the usual business meeting of officers was held, followed by the general meeting in the college auditorium. The program opened with the pledge to the flag by Brig. General Maxwell E. Rich, which of course, followed the organ prelude, congregational singing. Mr. Standley H. Rich gave an interesting and informative report on the O Neils in the Rich family, compiled by he and his wife on their recent visit abroad. Special tribute was paid by the family to their President Dr. Edward I. Rich of Ogden, only surviving child of Charles C. Rich.Polly Rich Griffin of Salt Lake, gave the life history of her grandmother, Emeline Grover Rich, fifth wife of Chas. C. Rich, and the personality honored at this 1954 reunion.Honored guest was Elder Alma Sonne of Salt Lake, who spoke on The Privileges of an Apostle.A note of saddness prevailed as Lettie B. Rich, due to ill health, tendered her resignation as family historian, a post she has faithfully and expertly filled for 50 years. Succeeding her is Ruth Pugmire Carter, former assistant historian. In Mrs Richs final report to the reunion he advised the 1954 statistics to show a total of 2, 765 living descendants of Charles Coulsen Rich. Another special feature of the reunion was the awarding of a bronze plaque holding the carved bronze image of Charles C. Rich, to the. oldest grandchild present, Sarah Jane Allred, 85 years old. Another plaque of the same type was to be awarded to the family who had traveled from,the fartherest point to especially at tend the 1953 reunion. At the present time this award winner had not been determined.Music and special numbers for both programs were furnished by Carole Rich, who sang Rocking Alone, in honor of Emeline Grover Rich; the Rich sisters, Barbara Rich Hoge, Elna Rich Seamonds and Mona Rich Poole; organ music, Jannette.McEntire, accompanists, Leva Rich DeAnn Rich and Clair Eccles Shaw violin solo, Cleone Rich Eccles members of the fifth generation sang Love Divine, under direction of Lenore Rich Wright; vocal quartet, Ronald Allred, Harvey Allred, Eldon Allred. and Darrell Hoopes, sang two numbers; Norman Rich, saxaphone solo; congregational singing under the direction of Barbara Rich Hoge and Eugene O. Rich. LeGrande Humpherys introduced Jesse Duffin, great grandson of Charles C. Ridh and Harriet Sargent, sixth wife who was chosen as the 1955 Rich Reunion Chairman; after which Jesse Duffin save the benediction.During the Sunday general session, a motion picture show was given for the children, and nursery was available for the small children. At 1 p. m. the annual family dinner was held under the trees and at 3 p. m. a reorganization meeting was held, after which the 1954 reunion was adjourned and the family departed for their homes delighted and pleased with a wonderful reunion and many thanks to chairman LeGrande Humpherys for a very good time.Reporting Secretary |
