The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

Show New Altitude, Speed Marks Set by Air Force PlanesOMAHA, NEB., Aug. 21 (UP) Air Force Secretary Harold Talbott said Saturday night an Air Force test plane has just broken the worlds altitude record, and that another broke the worlds speed record at 1, 650 m. p. h.Talbott also said that refueled B47 jet bombers spent 35 hours in the air on a 17, 000 mile nonstop flight.The Air Force secretary cited these accomplishments in a speech before the Air Force Associations convention.The world almanac lists the old speed record for jet planes at 1, 327 miles per hour, set Nov. 20, 1953, by Scott Crossfield over Edwards Air Force Base in a Douglas Skyrocket dropped from a B29 at 32, 000 feet.In his speech, however, Talbott stressed the altitude record, which broke the old mark of 83, 235 feet. But he did not say what the new record was.At a news conference, Talbott refused to elaborate, saying that details are secret.In Washington, informed sources said 90, 000 feet or 17 miles would be a good guess for the altitude record.These sources said the record was made in a Bell Aircraft X1A, an experimental rocket plane, two months ago at Edwards Air Force Base in California. |
