I was called out and placed in the insurance dept. to run a Typewriter. Dont know whether I’ll land a berth up there or not but its all right whatever they do. The Capt. up there told me I’d never go in the ranks as an infantry private. No mail from home yet from anyone. Not time yet. Its seems an awful long time since I left home. Had my long “beautiful”? locks cut off today I look like a convict. (3) Friday Aug 16th 1918, 11:15AM. It’s a week tonight since I left home seems like a year. Guess I’ll get some mail today.. I hope so at least a letter would sure taste good. No drill this morning. The bunch all went over to take out Insurance I went along and laid around talking to Sergeant Roberts, He’s an old timer from the Philippines and has seen about six years of service and can spin some very interesting yarns. He says this camp is about twenty miles square, and there’s about thirty thousand men here now with more to come. Five thousand from camp Lewis I heard yesterday. Wish they’d wait and send Lee down here.
