| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show 1918 St Genis. Wed Nov 20th. I was a little blue when I wrote last but am feeling better today We moved from Brest on Sunday via French RR system (Box cars) The box cars are only about 20 ft long and they put 40 men in a car It sure crowded us up and we passed two days and one miserable night in the cars like sardines It was awful We got to the town of Pons at 9:30 Monday night and stayed over night and breakfast yesterday We took an eight mile hike in full packs and of all the torture I ever went through that was the worst. I never thought I could do the Stunts I have done in the army but it seems they can be done We are now living in what they call “Billets” which are rusty barns and cowsheds Some life I dont think How Id like a letter from home shorthand bound to wonder how they all are and what they are doing and if I’m going to be able to send them anything for Christmas I sure wont, unless we have a pay day soon. There’s a report that we go back to Brest in two days if so I hope its a move in the direction of the States I’m sick of France and the Army too Civil life looks good to me now |
