Show MONDAY EVENING, MARCH 13, 1933 Tigers and Warriors Prepare For State Cage Tournament Lineups For Opening Games Announced By Local Court Coaches OGDEN TEAMS FAVORED OVER RIVAL QUINTS State Tournament Opens Wednesday; Sixteen Machines Enroll Sixteen hoop teams of all parts of Utah will begin the quest of the 1933 scholastic championship at the Deseret gymnasium at Salt Lake Wednesday. Teams enrolled in the joust are: Logan, Weber, Ogden, Granite, North Summit, East, Cyprus, Jordan, Lehi, Nephi, Springville, Branch A. C., Carbon, Beaver, Gunnison and Bicknell. The opening game is scheduled for one-thirty o'clock and the closing contest is booked for nine thirty p. m. Ogden, state scholastic champions, and Weber, runner-up last season, will be in opposite brackets in the 1933 classic. The Weberites won the . Ogden division championship for the second consecutive season with Ogden the runner-up again. Logan and Gunnison will open , the annual tournament at one- thirty Wednesday. The balance of the opening round schedule follows: 1:30 p. m.-Logan vs. Gunnison. 2:30 p. m.-Lehi vs. Carbon. 3:30 p. m.-Weber vs. North Summit. 4:30 p. m.-Granite vs. Beaver. 6:30 p. m.-Springville vs. Bicknell. 7:30 p. m.-Jordan vs. Branch A. C. 8:30 p. m.-East vs. Nephi. 9:30 p. m.-Ogden vs. Cyprus. Ogden and Weber hoopsters engaged in their final workouts today. Coach Dick Kapple of the Tigers and Coach Mark Ballif of the Warriors report their players in splendid trim for the four day series. Both teams will be quartered at the Hotel Temple Square at Salt Lake. "Pot Shot," Standard-Examiner basketball expert, who picked Ogden and Weber both to go to the finals last season, gives Ogden and Weber an edge over their opponents in the first round Wednesday. In the event that Ogden gets over Cyprus the Tigers stand a fine chance of going to the finals. Weber is one of the favored teams i in her bracket and should travel a long way. "Pot Shot" picks the opening :games as follows: Logan 33, Gunnison 26. Lehi 29, Carbon 24. Weber 40, North Summit 24. Granite 34, Beaver 18. Springville 31, Bicknell 25. Jordan 30, Branch A. C. 29. Nephi 31, East 27. Ogden 32, Cyprus 30. Ogden Meets Cyprus Five North Summit-Weber In Afternoon Feature Ogden high hoopsters, state scholastic champions, and Weber high courtiers, runner-up last season, both engaged in light workouts today in preparation for competition; in the state basketball tournament at Salt Lake, commencing Wednesday. Both teams are reported in ideal condition for the four-day joust. The Tigers will be performing witii an entire new team while the Warriors will return to Salt Lake with four members of the 1932 team in suits. Coach Dick Kapple of the Tigers will probably star the following lineup against the Cyprus; Ellis and Boerens, forwards; Kennedy, center; Hall and Greenwell, guards. Weber high will probably open the game with North Summit Wednesday with Powell and Dieu at forwards; Spilsbury at center; Cragun and McLean at guards. Eight men will be represented on each of the local teams in the state series. Both coaches, however, plan to have ten men in suits at the state joust, although only eight of these men will be eligible. Sixteen teams will compete for the state gonfalon. LOCAL TEAMS STRONG Ogden High will begin the defense of the state scholastic basketball title at Salt Lake Wednesday. Weber High, the other Ogden representative, will be in the joust also. The Weberites finished second in the 1932 series. Both the Tigers and Warriors are in opposite brackets. The "Orange Streaks" oppose Cyprus in their first contest while Weber meets North Summit. The writer picks both teams to get by the first round but looks for , two spirited contests. The local fives are not expected to advance to the finals in their respective brackets ... but such a feat would not surprise this writer. Weber and Ogden both have polished fives and a great deal of the credit for the showing of the; local machines is due to the fine coaching of Mark Ballif and Dick Kapple. |
