Show Admissions Admissions Student Activity Eligibility Minimum eligibility requirements for participation in student activities such as student government, campus organizations, clubs, special awards and intramural athletics include current enrollment as a matriculated student working toward a degree or certificate. Many programs have standards above this minimum. (See Student Activity Eligibility and Social Standards for the complete policy.) ADMISSIONS Director: L. In compliance with the intent of the Utah State Board of Regents and the Utah Legislature, Weber State will implement undergraduate admission requirements beginning with Autumn Quarter of the 1993-94 academic year. The admission requirements are designed to provide educational opportunities to those students best prepared to benefit. All students who plan to enroll at Weber State must complete an application for admission and pay a nonrefundable application fee by the appropriate deadlines. The application for admission deadlines for 1993-94 are as follows: Autumn Quarter: July 1; Winter Quarter: December 3; Spring Quarter: February 25; Summer Quarter: May 20. International students must apply no later than 90 days prior to the start of school each quarter. All applicants must submit official transcripts of credit from each school previously attended. Applicants who are currently enrolled at another college or university must submit an official copy of their transcript as evidence that they are in good academic standing and must submit an official copy of their final transcript as soon as it is available. Application forms are available at all Utah high schools or from the Admissions Office, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, 84408-1015. Applications are reviewed when all required information is on file, and applicants are notified of their admission status as soon as possible. If admission is granted prior to high school graduation or while work is in progress at another college or university, the decision is contingent upon satisfactory completion of graduation requirements or the work in progress and will be revoked if the student fails to graduate or if the transfer work is not acceptable. Acceptance notices are valid only for the quarter indicated. Documents submitted by applicants who do not enroll will be discarded after a period of one year. Departmental Admission Requirements Admission to the University does not ensure acceptance into a specific program, department, or college of the University. Some academic departments require additional information and separate application forms before considering students for admission into selective programs. It is possible for students to be admitted to Weber State but denied admission to a particular department such as Nursing, Dental Hygiene, or Teacher Education. Applicants are responsible for supplying all supplementary materials required by those departments. Students should contact the department in which they are interested or the Academic Advisement Center for specific details. Freshmen Students A carefully planned program of high school course work can give students a definite edge in their college work. Those who master certain basic subjects and skills in high school can substantially increase their chances for success at the university level. For Autumn Quarter 1993 and thereafter, WSU will admit new students on the basis of an admissions index number calculated from American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Assessment Tests (SAT) composite scores and cumulative high school grade point averages (see admissions index chart, page 14). New students with index numbers above an annually established index number will be admitted. Those with index numbers below the required minimum will be required to present evidence of academic readiness before being reconsidered. The index number will be established in relation to the availability of space on the main campus. Applicants whose index numbers are below the required minimum will be denied admission to the main campus but will be eligible to enroll at one of WSU's off-campus centers. Upon completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours at an off-campus center (including basic skills requirements in English and math) with a grade point average of 2.25 or above, students may be reconsidered for admission to the main campus. Nontraditional students 25 years of age and older will be considered for admission without reference to the admissions index, but will be required to present evidence of high school graduation or high school equivalency and must meet basic skills requirements established by the University. For the 1993-94 academic year, WSU will admit new students without reference to the number of high school units completed in various subjects. The University has developed the following list of recommended high school courses: four years of English; two years of mathematics; two years of biological/physical science; one year of American history, two years of the same foreign language; four additional courses, at least two of which should be from the following: history, English, mathematics beyond algebra, laboratory science, fine arts, and computer science. Students whose proficiency in English and math fall below basic skill levels will be assessed a Student Development fee each quarter. They will be exempt from the fee when they have satisfied English and Math proficiency and have completed at least 30 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better. English proficiency may be satisfied by a grade of C or better in English 096, or by passing the English Writing test, or by achieving a score of 17 or better on the ACT English test. Math proficiency may be satisfied by a score of 17 or above on the ACT Mathematics test, or a grade of C or better in Math 096, or by passing the Math Placement test with a score high enough to be placed in Math 105 or beyond. It should be noted that the basic skill courses of English 096 and Math 096 carry an additional fee of $21 per credit hour in addition to regular tuition and the Student Development fee. English and Math proficiency are not the same as the English and Math competency requirements for graduation. (See WSU Core Requirements.) New freshmen must complete the following admission application steps: 1. Submit an application for admission. 2. Pay the application fee. 3. Submit evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or evidence of high school graduation equivalency. High school graduation equivalency may be satisfied in one of the following ways: (a) by passing the General Education Development test (GED) with an overall score of 45 or better with no individual score below 40. Applicants who satisfy high school equivalency via the GED must also submit ACT/SAT or Basic Skills placement test results; (b) by passing the American College Test (ACT) with a composite score of 20 or better (SAT of 840 or above). NOTE: To satisfy high school equivalency in this manner, an applicant's high school class must have graduated. 4. Submit ACT or SAT scores if less than 25 years of age. Students 25 years of age or older may submit ACT/SAT scores or scores from the English and math placement tests administered by the WSU Testing Center. 5. Submit an official transcript from their high school of graduation. The transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the WSU Admissions Office. Transfer Students Transfer students 24 years of age and under who have completed less than 45 credit hours will be considered for admission on the same basis as new freshmen provided Student Services Science 14 15 |
