Show Health, P.E., Recreation The roles of HPE are to: 1. Advise and support the students who are interested in health and physical fitness academic programs. 2. Support the general education program at Weber State University in the areas of health and physical education, as well as personal development. 3. Support Weber State University wellness programs. 4. Promote health and wellness in the community by establishing partnerships with local agencies and industries. 5. Prepare individuals for careers in the areas of health, nutrition, physical education and sport. The goals of HPE are to: 1. Provide viable programs that prepare students for careers in the areas of life-style management and physical fitness. 2. Expand in advance the knowledge in health and physical fitness through applied research, and the dissemination of such activities. 3. Develop healthy life-style behaviors via education, diagnosis and prescription. 4. Promote physical fitness by providing opportunities for individuals to participate in a variety of fitness, sport and recreational activities. Students interested in professional career preparation may emphasize: athletics, physical education, recreation, health promotion, coaching, and life-style management. In addition, special preparation may be obtained by designing a general studies (B.l.S.) program (e.g. executive fitness, commercial physical education). The recreation and leisure needs of college students can be met through participating in intramurals, campus recreation, sports clubs, and scheduled free play. The Intramural Program consists of a variety of activities organized on a competitive and recreational basis and is open to students, faculty and staff. PROGRAM: LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Not more that 85 hours for the major will be accepted from courses in the Department of HPE. • A minor is not required. • Lifestyle Management majors must have a 2.25 GPA or better in major courses. No more than one "D" is acceptable. The overall GPA must be 2.00 or better. Application and acceptance into the Lifestyle Management Program. Prerequisites: PE 220; Health 310; Nutri PD105; Beas PD170; Engl EN111, Enl 12; Math 105. Specific Requirements: • Completion of a 34-hour core in HPE courses. • Fulfillment of internship/special projects/ senior seminar 15 hours: 12 hours PE 486/Health 486 (2-9) and/or PE 289/ 489/Health 289/489 (1-9); 2 hours PE 480/Health 480 (2-5) Special Projects; and 1 hour PE 499 (1) senior Seminar. Completion of at least 20-25 hours of support courses from three areas: Written (3-5 hours): Engl 327 (3); Commun 113 (5), 235 (3); Educ 304 (3). Oral (3 hours): Commun HU102 (3), 214 (3), 350 (3), 380 (3). Biomedical (14-15 hours): Hthsci 111 (5), 112(5), 113 (5) or Zool LS 201 (5); Zool LS 202 (4) and Chem PS 101 (5) or Micro LS 115(4). • Completion of 23-26 hours in Human and Resource Management Area: Required courses (17 hours): PE 462 (3); Beas PD170 (4); Commun 240 (3); Psych SS200 (3); Mgmt 312 (4); Electives (6-9 hours): Select one elective from each area or two courses from the same area by advisement: Resource Management: HAS 300 (4); Mkgt 301 (4), 320 (4); SST 114 (4), 160 (3), 244 (5). A student may select Professional Area courses only and no electives. PROGRAM: PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHING MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: WSU Core Requirements (see index). General Education Requirements (see index). Commun HU102, Zool LS201, and Health 200 are required for P.E. majors and Psych SS101 is recommended. A teaching minor is required. P.E. Teaching Majors refer to Teacher Education requirements. Physical Education teaching majors must have a 2.85 GPA or better in major courses. No more than one "D" grade is acceptable. Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.85 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Physical Education teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education). Secondary school teachers are required to pass a metric and spelling competency test prior to admission. Outside Professional Activities—Student must participate in three outside professional activities approved by an adviser. PROGRAM: DUAL CERTIFICATION OF SECONDARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL For individuals holding a secondary physical education certificate who desire to work in the elementary schools, dual certification is available. See the department chair for more information. PROGRAM: ATHLETIC COACHING MINOR General Requirements: • Minors must achieve a GPA of 2.25 or better in minor courses. Professional Activities (Related to Coaching/Theory and in consultation with adviser (2 credit hours): PE 170 (2), 171 (2), 172 (2), 270 (2), 272 (2), 370 (2), 371 (2), 372 (2), or two 1-hour P.E. intermediate level activity classes.
