Art for Elementary Teachers (3) A, W, S Theory and practice of teaching art in the elementary schools. Prerequisites: Art HU103 and Educ 195. Formerly Art 250. 351. Art Methods & Resources for Secondary Teachers (3) W Experiences with the various art processes, tools, and media available and appropriate to teaching secondary school art, including audio and visual instructional resources, and examination of approaches to teaching. Requires at least 10 hours of observation/participation with a variety of populations and educational situations. Prerequisites: Foundation, Core and Art 251 or consent of instructor and prerequisite to student teaching. Formerly: Art for Secondary Teachers. 352. Theories of Learning in Art Education (3) A A review, analysis and discussion of learning theories in education, with emphasis on their implication and relationship to the teaching of art. Class format based on lecture, discussion, library assignments, and classroom observation experiences. Prerequisites: Art 251 & Educ 301 or consent of instructor. 354. Weaving II (3) A, W, S Use of design elements of weaving through the study of tools, materials, and techniques. Exploration of pattern weaves and tapestry techniques on 4-harness looms. Prerequisites: Art 116 and 254 or Foundation and Core or consent of instructor. 355. The View Camera (4) S (Offered on even numbered years) Introduction to the theory and practice of black and white photography using the view camera. Emphasis on developing sensitivity to and awareness of the special approaches and circumstances, both physical and psychological, encountered in the use of large format/view cameras. Prerequisite: Art 215 or consent of instructor. (Formerly Photo 340) 360. Painting II (3) A, W Consolidates and further develops material covered in Painting I. Investigations include the figure, mixed media and abstraction. Historical precedents are discussed through slide lecture as an aid to development. Prerequisites: Art 116 and 260 or consent of instructor. 365. Watercolor Painting II (3) A, W, S Intermediate class in watercolor painting. Emphasis on transparent approach with introduction to gouache. Prerequisites: Art 116 and 265 or Foundation and Core or consent of instructor. 370. Sculpture II (3) A, S Development of the form language of sculpture with projects designed to further conceptual thinking skills, to learn technical skills and to explore new areas of interest in the 3-D visual arts. Prerequisites: Art 117 and 270 or consent of instructor. 375. Color Photography II (4) W Theory, practice and aesthetics of shooting, developing, and printing color transparency materials. Refinement of techniques and aesthetics learned in Color Photography I. Emphasis is placed on the creative application of color photography. Prerequisite: Art 275 or consent of instructor. (Formerly Photo 310) 385. Documentary Photography (4) S (odd) The theory, practice and aesthetics or producing photographic documentary projects. Emphasis will be placed on defining areas of inquiry and using the camera as the main vehicle for communicating concerns. Prerequisites: Art 115 and 225 or consent of instructor. 404. Native American Art of the Southwest: Anasazi to the Present (4) A Focuses on the arts of the Native Americans in the Southwest with occasional relevant explorations of North and Meso American Indian art in general. *411. Advanced Drawing (3) A, S Continued drawing exploration in varied media. Prerequisite: Art 312 or consent of instructor. *412. Advanced Figure Drawing (3) A studio drawing class building advanced skills with the human figure with emphasis on examining the figure engaged in functional activity and an increased stress on creative experimentation with materials and format. Prerequisite: Art 312 or consent of instructor. *420. Advanced Screenprinting/Relief (3) W An advanced level class in printmaking with emphasis on exploring one or both processes in depth. Advanced Intaglio/Lithography (3) 5 An advanced level class in printmaking with emphasis on exploring one or both processes in depth. Introduction of photographic techniques. Ceramic Glaze Calculation (3) A (Offered on even numbered years) Glaze formulation to achieve definitive objectives for desired glaze qualities. Kiln objectives for desired glaze qualities. Kiln operation. Prerequisite: Art 331 or consent of instructor. *431. Advanced Ceramics (3) A, S Advanced problems in ceramic design and construction with emphasis on sculptural forms and techniques. Advanced Computer Aided Art and Design (3) S Expanded development of concepts and skills that utilize the computer to solve visual art and design problems. Visual Communications: Advanced Illustration (3) W, S Application of imaging skills to a broad range of illustration problems in visual communications. Prerequisite: Foundation and Art 243 or consent of instructor. 452. Seminar for Art Teachers (3) S Examination of trends, issues, procedures and supervision within the context of art education and the contemporary cultural milieu with emphasis on integrating/synthesizing knowledge and training background. Class based on seminar course format. Prerequisites: Art 351 and 352, plus a minimum of 18 additional art hours or consent of instructor. *454. Weaving III (3) A, W, S Advanced weaves on 4-harness looms, projects combining structural/sculptural variations with woven and non-woven techniques. Commercial Portfolio (2) A (Offered on even numbered years) The design and production of a professional quality photographic portfolio for use in seeking employment in commercial photography. Business practices, studio set-up, free-lance photography and other employment opportunities will be explored. Prerequisite: Open to juniors and seniors only with the consent of instructor. Painting III (3) A, W Emphasis on developing independence in the painting student and to provide an opportunity for them to pursue their own area of interest in painting while providing the necessary feedback from the interaction of a class. Sculpture III (3) A, S Advanced individual problems in selected areas of concentration; research and development of conceptual, technical and methodological concerns. Prerequisite: Art 370 or consent of instructor. 475. Experimental Photography (4) W Experimental photographic alternatives to the traditional methods of photographic image-making. Emphasis will be placed on using the camera and darkroom techniques in ways that will give the students the mind-set and ability to push the limits of the medium. Prerequisite: Art 215 and 315 or consent of instructor. (Formerly Photo 470) 483. Directed Readings (1-5) A, W, S Individually chosen readings on specialized topic supervised by a faculty member. Cooperative Work Experience (1-3, 9 maximum) A, W, S An opportunity for students to receive academic credit for faculty approved on-the-job learning experiences within certain visual arts areas of emphasis. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. 499. B.F.A. Seminar (3) Emphasis will be on the development and synthesis of ideas, writing skills, portfolio preparation, fine-tuning technique, and critical evaluation in preparation for and completion of the Senior Thesis Exhibit and written statement.
