Price, Mary Quiroz-Whisler ESL Specialist: Ada Hardenbrook ESL Tutor: Carl Critchlow Weber State provides an intensive English program with four levels of curriculum for international students with TOEFL scores below 500 and other non-native speakers of English. Students entering the ESL program will be comprehensively tested to determine and evaluate their English language skills and placed in appropriate classes. A passing grade of C+ or higher is required to be advanced to the next level in the ESL program. Starting in Level B, students will be allowed to take concurrent academic courses on a limited basis. The credits generated by ESL courses in Levels B, C, and D will count towards graduation as electives. All international students, regardless of TOEFL scores, and other non-native speakers of English must complete ESL 222 or pass it by challenge examination before they will be allowed to register for English 111 and 112, the College Writing courses. We prepare students to function effectively in a foreign language while gaining an understanding and appreciation of humanistic ideals and values. Mastery of a language is the hallmark of a world citizen. A bachelor of arts degree is offered with a regular (or teaching) major or minor in French, German, or Spanish. A Japanese minor as well as composite minors, and a departmental honors program are also offered. It is possible to obtain a language emphasis for the BIS degree by completing 25 hours, 16 of which must be upper- division course work. Courses in other languages are offered on a regular basis. The curriculum is based on a National Standard for measuring proficiency. Each course is designed to foster linguistic skills and to increase the students' ability to participate in the culture. Foreign Language Requirement for the Bachelor of Arts Degree A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts degree satisfies the foreign language requirement upon the successful completion of one of the following options: (1) The candidate passes WSU foreign language course HU203 with a minimum grade of "C+" or passes any upper-division WSU foreign language course (excepting 330) with a minimum grade of "C." (2) The candidate documents a proficiency level of "Intermediate Low" through an examination administered by the WSU Foreign Language Department or through an examination by a recognized testing agency. (3) The candidate transfers credit showing the completion of a college-level, second-year foreign language program with a minimum grade of "C+" or transfers credit showing completion of an upper-division foreign language course taught in the foreign language with a minimum grade of "C." NOTE: The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree does not have a foreign language requirement. Credit for English as a Second Language Students for whom English is a second language may receive 24 hours of foreign language credit in English to meet the B.A. requirement. The English Department will certify this credit after verifying the language skill by the following procedure: A. Verify proficiency in the non-English native language in cooperation with the Foreign Languages Department. B. Verify proficiency in English as a second language by one of the following: 1. Challenge and pass the ESL Exit Test at Weber State. 2. Complete the special examination request form and take the ESL special examination. Obtaining Foreign Language Credit for Prior Language Experience Students with prior language experience may challenge foreign language courses 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, and HU203 by completing one of the following options: (1) Pass a course at a higher proficiency level than the course(s) challenged with a minimum grade of "C." (2) Demonstrate the appropriate proficiency level through an examination administered by the Foreign Language Department ("Novice High" for students challenging the first year and "Intermediate Low" for students challenging the second year). Upon the payment of a nominal fee, hours earned in this fashion are recorded as "credit" on the transcript and do not affect the student's GPA. The department may accept results from other foreign language testing agencies as evidence of proficiency. Application for credit is to be made at the office of the Department of Foreign Languages.
