Henderson, Shi-Hwa Wang Description The Department of Performing Arts program at Weber State is based on five primary purposes: (1) to develop aesthetically aware and artistically discriminating citizens; (2) to provide opportunities for all students to participate in creative, artistic experiences and to encourage community members to participate in the performing arts; (3) to develop artistic competence and sensitivity; (4) to provide for career development in the arts through the preparation of teachers, performing artists, scholars, and technical specialists; and (5) to expose students and community to classic and contemporary works in all genres of the performing arts and to continue to provide the finest possible performances in the arts. The department's degree programs prepare students for professional careers in teaching and performance as well as in technical specialities while providing the liberal arts background necessary for graduate study. In the department's Performing Arts Series, students and faculty participate in professionally produced dance, musical, and theatrical events. DANCE AREA Description The primary goals of the Dance area are: 1) to develop aesthetically aware and artistically discriminating citizens; 2) to encourage appreciation of dance through critical thinking; 3) to provide opportunities for students and community members to participate in a variety of dance experiences; 4) to encourage creativity in dance performance, improvisation, choreography, teaching, and collaborative endeavors; and 5) to prepare teachers qualified to teach the content of the Utah core curriculum for dance. Two departmental minors are offered: (1) Dance: Performance and Choreography and (2) Dance Education. Dance minors follow a program which provides a common core of courses followed by elective courses. A minimum of twenty-five (25) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) must be completed in the Dance Area courses. Teaching minors must also complete a minimum of twenty-five (25) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) from the Dance Area courses and, in addition, satisfy all requirements for the Certification Program as outlined by the College of Education. Dance teaching minors are strongly encouraged to select teaching majors in subject areas which Utah secondary schools are required to teach. Performance Opportunities Orchesis Dance Theatre provides performance and production opportunities for qualified students and community members who demonstrate technical abilities in dance. The company's activities include on-campus and dance festival concerts. Its repertoire consists of traditional and experimental modem dances, contemporary ballets and theatrical and performance works choreographed/directed by dance faculty, students, and well-known artists. Auditions are required for performances sponsored by Orchesis. Weber State Touring Company further provides performance and production opportunities. Significant dance works and lecture-demonstrations are performed in the public schools and for campus and community organizations. PROGRAM: DANCE MINOR AND DANCE TEACHING MINOR General Requirements: • Minors must achieve a GPA of 2.25 or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements (25 credit hours with advisor approval): • Required courses (18 credit hours minimum): Dance HU101 (3), 147 (1), 149 (1), 247 (1), 249 (1), 271 (2), 291*(1), 332 (2), 349*(1), 386 (2), 491**(2), PE 364 (2). • Elective courses (7 credit hours): Dance 148 (1), 241 (2), 248 (1), 292 (1-6), 330 (2), 340 (2), 492 (1-6), support courses from other disciplines. *May be repeated three times. **May be repeated once. DANCE COURSES-DANCE Courses numbered from 146-153 and 247-249 meet the physical education activities requirements, under WSU Core Requirements (see index). They are also listed in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in the College of Education. Dance students are strongly encouraged to see the Director of Dance for additional dance offerings. HU101. Introduction to Dance (3) A, W, S An introduction to dance providing a knowledge base from which to experience dance from a variety of viewpoints: historically, culturally, aesthetically, critically, and creatively. 146. Folk Dance (1) S Folk and ethnic dances of Europe, Near and Far East, Africa, and the Americas as they relate to concert dance. Open to all students. 147. Ballet, Elementary (1) A, W, S Introduction to the techniques of the classical ballet including alignment, positions, port de bras, and allegro combinations. Open to all students. 148. Jazz Dance, Elementary (1) A, W, S Introduction to the style, technique, and rhythmic structures of jazz dance with emphasis on increasing movement capabilities and personal expression. Open to all students. 149. Modern Dance, Elementary (1) A, W, S Introduction to the movement techniques of modem dance, to all students. Open 152. Social Dance (1) S Social and ballroom dances of Europe and the Americas as they relate to concert dance. Open to all students. 153. Square Dance (1) W Square, round and long dances of Europe and the Americas as they relate to concert dance. Open to all students. 241. Dance Composition and Improvisation (2) A Guided exploration in the elements of dance for the creative development of personal movement repertoire, spontaneous group interaction, and choreographic skills. Prerequisite: Dance 149 (offered in odd numbered years). 247. Intermediate Ballet (1) A, W, S Technique course designed to increase skill in classical ballet. Prerequisite: Dance 147 or consent of instructor. 248. Jazz Dance, Intermediate (1) A, W, S Refinement of beginning skills, emphasis on development of technical abilities and performance qualities. Prerequisite: Dance 148 or consent of instructor. 249. Modern Dance, Intermediate (1) A,W,S Refinement of beginning skills, emphasis on development of technical abilities and performance qualities. Prerequisite: Dance 149 or consent of instructor. 271. Professional Activities (2) S Teaching of American square, contra, and round and international folk and social dance. Includes study of sociocultural, historical, geographic, and musical influences in the development of dance forms. Also for physical education majors and minors. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Dance Area who meet the minimum cooperative work experience requirements of the department. Provides academic credit for on-the-job experience. Grade and amount of credit will be determined by the department. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 credits. 291. Dance Preparation (1) A, W, S Preparation and rehearsal of dance composition to be presented in concert. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. PD292S. Community Service (3) Students will receive an overview of community service and explore opportunities for service learning in the community. Five preparatory workshops (first week only) followed by 55 hours of approved community service. 332. Techniques and Materials for Teaching Modern Dance (2) (Offered odd years) Methods, teaching techniques, accompaniment, and practical experience in teaching modem dance. Also for physical education majors and minors. Prerequisites: Dance 249. 340. Dance Production (2) A practical application of principles which serve the presentation of dance. The course deals with choreographic problems including staging, lighting, costumes and movement. Prerequisites: consent of instructor. 344. Dance for Musical Theatre (2) Dance skills and techniques taken from the repertoire of the modem musical theatre. Special emphasis on characterization and style as demonstrated by the works of the leading choreographers of this genre. Prerequisites: Dance 148 and 149. 349. Advanced Modern Dance (1) S Exercises and activities to develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and technical dance skill. Prerequisite: Dance 249.
