Show English English Specific Requirements: Minimum of 45 credit hours in English courses with a minimum of 30 credit hours in upper division. Bachelor of Science: Quantitative language requirements (courses in formal logic, economics, business, math, or computer science): Fifteen (15) hours will be selected from non-general education courses to be determined by the Department of English, in consultation with the student, to achieve the student's occupational goals. PROGRAM: ENGLISH TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR OF ARTS AND BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for English Teaching majors. • English Teaching majors must have a 2.0 or better in major courses. • English Teaching majors must achieve an overall minimum of 2.50 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining an English Teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and fill out an application for student teaching at least one quarter prior to their student teaching block. Student Teaching takes place over two quarters during the fall and winter of each year. Educational courses and English methods are taught contextually during the student teaching block. In the mornings students teach under the direction of a public school master teacher. In the afternoons, students attend the following classes at the school site to assist them in their teaching: Educ 301 (4), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (15), 499 (3); Engl 340 (3), 341 (3). Students should take the following Educational courses before the Student Teaching block: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 303 (3), 305 (3), 365 (3). Specific Requirements: • Bachelor of Arts: Twenty-four (24) hours of a foreign language are required for a Bachelor of Arts degree. • Bachelor of Science: Instead of 24 hours of a foreign language, English teaching majors taking a Bachelor of Science degree are required to take 15 hours of quantitative language courses as specified under the English departmental major with the Bachelor of Science degree. English Teaching Major: • Minimum of 48 credit hours in English courses, 30 of which must be upper division. The following English courses are required: Critical Approaches. English 308 (3) Writing. One of the following: Engl 321 (3), 325 (3), or 328 (3). Grammar. Engl 323 (3). Methods. Engl 340 (3) and 341 (3). Language. One of the following: Engl 421 (3) or 422 (3). Literature. Engl 331 (3) and 373 (3). Shakespeare. One of the following: Engl 368 (5) or 369 (5). Individual Writers. One of the following: Engl 367 (3), 370 (3), or 471 (2). American Literature. Two of the following: Engl 451(3), 452 (3), 453 (3) 454 (3), or 455 (3). British Literature. Two of the following: Engl 461 (5), 462 (5), 463 (5), 464 (5), 465 (5), or 466 (5). Recommended courses: Engl 355 (3), 499 (2). Electives: Engl 235 (2), 275 (3), 310 (3), 326 (3), 327 (3), 335 (3), 337 (3), 350 (3), 358 (3), 360 (3), 372 (3), 374 (5), 380 (3), 382 (3), 388 (3), 423 (3), 475 (3), 483 (2-5), 492 (1-6). NOTE: The required courses in critical approaches, writing, and grammar must be completed before student teaching; the methods courses are to be taken before or concurrently with student teaching. PROGRAM: ENGLISH AND COMMUNICATION COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJOR - (See program requirements in the composite Teaching Majors section of the College of Education.) PROGRAM: ENGLISH DEPARTMENTAL HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 15 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for English departmental or teaching major. Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling the requirements for English Departmental Honors the English major must take at least 15 credit hours on an Honors basis. This must include the senior seminar Engl 499. • The department strongly recommends the following be considered by the Honors candidate: Chaucer, Milton and/ or Shakespeare. • A student may receive English Honors credit for any upper division English course including Directed Readings, Engl 483, for a maximum of 5 hours. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) ASIAN STUDIES MINOR The Department of English participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. Students who wish to participate should indicate their desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the students work out a proper combination of courses to fit their particular needs. Lower division courses Engl HL251 and HL261 are not recommended for English majors and minors because they duplicate required courses 451, 452, 453, 454, 455, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466.
