PROGRAM: OFFICE SYSTEMS SUPPORT ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE General Requirements: • At lease 20 hours from the general education courses listed in the catalog including at least one course in each of the four areas of Humanities (HU and HL), Natural Sciences (LS and PS), Social Sciences (SS and SB), and Personal Development (PD). • English EN111 and EN 112. • 93 total hours are required. • This degree does require math competency (see index). BUSINESS EDUCATION/ ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS COURSES - BEAS 101. Elementary PC Keyboarding and Applications (3) An automated approach to learning the keyboard and the keyboarding of letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. 104. Speedbuilding Keyboarding (3) Keyboard review. Intensive drill work for speed pertaining to individual student assessment as determined by using word processing software on a microprocessor. 121. Elementary Shorthand (4) Introduction to shorthand theory with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. Prerequisite: keyboarding 40 wpm. 122. Intermediate Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Shorthand theory in practice dictation. Shorthand 50 wpm recommended. 123. Advanced Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Stenographic abbreviations, phrases, and transcription. Shorthand 70 wpm recommended. 150. Business Mathematics by Calculating Machines (4) Problems in percentage, discount, simple and compound interest, merchandising, taxes, etc., solved by calculators. 151. Calculating Machines (2) For students in majors other than Administrative Systems, Business Education or Office Systems Support. Using electronic 10-key calculators to solve personal business problems. Credit toward graduation requirements not granted for both Beas 150 and 151. PD170. Microcomputer Applications (4) A general introduction to the use of microcomputers and microcomputer software. Includes an introduction to file structure and design, database concepts, financial spreadsheets, graphics, other microcomputer software, and ethical and international issues relating to the use of computers. The course requires two lecture sessions and three practicum sessions weekly. Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm recommended. *PD170A. Hardware/DOS (1) This unit covers an introduction to the basic parts of which make up a PC system, their functions, and an introduction to using DOS, the Disk Operating System. Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm is recommended. *PD170B. Introduction to Word Processing (1) This unit introduces the basic components of word processing including creating, storing, retrieving, editing, and merging documents. WordPerfect is the word processing software used. Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm is recommended. *PD170C. Introduction to Spreadsheets (1) This unit introduces spreadsheet systems, their functionality, manipulation and application. Lotus 1-2-3 is the spreadsheet software used. Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm is recommended. *PD170D. Introduction to Database (1) This unit introduces the basic components for a database system and its applications. dBase IV is the database management system software used. Keyboarding skill of 25 wpm is recommended. * The Beas PD170 course may be taken as one course or as four separate units. General education credit will be given ONLY upon the completion of all four units. When the last unit is completed, please check with the BEAS Department to apply for General Education credit. 201. Business English/Machine Transcription (4) English essentials, letter writing, proofreading, and transcribing machines. Prerequisites: Beas PD170 or 170B. 202. Records Management (3) The management, planning, and controlling of records including retrieval, equipment, supplies, microforms, vital records, word processing, and data automation techniques. 220. DOS/Windows (3) Provides basic DOS/Windows use on a personal computer. Prerequisite: Beas PD170 or 170A. Science 54 55 |
