Show Theatre Arts Theatre Arts an area of emphasis in: a) acting/directing, b) design/tech, c) management, or d) history/ literature. The Pinnacle Block provides a comprehensive, focused experience for graduating theatre majors in their junior and senior years. These courses have prerequisites which require completion of the Development Block requirements. The Integrated Studies Rationale reinforces the major by developing connections with other disciplines. Students are asked to recognize connections between 9 hours of courses outside theatre arts and their major in a written rationale. The Production Supplement courses use plays and musicals from the theatre arts season as a studio for training. Through these courses students can develop necessary skills for the theatre profession or for careers which value creativity and discipline. This course of study leads toward the bachelor of arts degree. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours (2.0 or better GPA) must be completed in Theatre Arts area courses. Teaching majors must complete a minimum of fifty- nine (59) credit hours (2.0 or better GPA) from the Theatre Arts courses and, in addition, satisfy all requirements for the Certification Program as outlined by the School of Education. While teaching majors are encouraged to pursue the bachelor of arts degree, they may choose either the bachelor of arts or the bachelor of science degree. All majors are encouraged to seek summer employment in stock or repertory companies relating to their interests. Weber State Theatre Season The yearly theatrical season includes productions mounted in the Monson, Allred, and Austad theatres. Because of these superior theatre facilities, a wide variety of theatre is produced in proscenium and flexible situations. The theatre season is offered by the Department of Performing Arts as part of the Performing Arts Series. Because the season is generously supported by the Associated Students of Weber State through student fees, students receive substantial discounts for performances. The Utah Musical Theatre The Utah Musical Theatre provides the focal point for exciting summer musical theatre in the western region. It is a semiprofessional summer company comprised of theatre artists from coast to coast, with paid positions open for staff, crew, and cast. Faculty, staff and student participants are selected by audition and application. PROGRAM: COMPOSITE MUSIC THE A TRE EMPHASIS BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: WSU Core Requirements (see index). General Education Requirements (see index). No minor is required. All major courses must be a C (2.00) or better. Must achieve an overall GPA of C (2.00) or better. 183 total credit hours are required. Sixty of the total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: 83 credit hours Pre-major Core for Musical Theatre Emphasis • Dance - HU101 (3). • Music - 109 (3) (if needed for admission to 110). • Theatre Arts - HU104 (3), 105 (3), 110 (3). Composite Musical Theatre Emphasis (83 credit hours) • Dance (20 credits): 10 units of technique classes selected from the following: 147 (1), 148 (1), 149 (1), 247 (1), 248 (1), 249 (1), 344 (2), 349 (1) (each of these courses may be repeated for credit as approved by the advisor); 241 (2), 291 (1), 491 (2); Electives (5). . Music (27 credits): 110abc(6), 11 labc(6), 216 (1), 219 (2), 339 (3), Private Voice (131 through 331) (9). . Theatre Arts (36 credits): 120 (3), 210 (3), 211 (4), 212 (3), 244 (3), 275 (2), 334 (3), 410 (3), 444 (3), and one of the following: 320 (3), 321 (3) or 322 (3); Upper division electives (6). Electives to be chosen in consultation with adviser. An overall GPA of 2.00 or C is required. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. • Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Theatre Arts courses required from the following (60 credit hours): Foundation Block: Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120(3), 130(3). Development Block: Theatr 212 (3), 240 (3), 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 410 (3), and one of the following: (Theatr 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3) or 323 (3) plus nine elective credits from the following tracks: Design/Tech (min 3 hours): Theatr 220 (3), 221 (3), 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3), 323 (3), 324 (3), and 325 (3). Acting/Directing (min 3 hours): Theatr 210 (3), 211 (3), 305 (3), 306 (3), 310 (3), 312 (3). History: Theatr 333 (3), 334 (3), Management: Theatr 340 (3), Commun 305 (3); Mgmt 312 (4). Pinnacle Block: Theatr 499 (3), and 480 (3), plus 3 elective credit hours from the following: Theatr 411(3), or 489 (3). Integrated Studies Rationale: A written rationale explaining connections between 9 credit hours of courses taken for "general requirements" and the major's chosen area of emphasis. It will be submitted to the Theatre Arts area coordinator as a requirement of TA 499 (Senior Seminar). Production Supplement: 2 credit hours of Theatr 215/415 (1), 2 credit hours of Theatr 225/425 (1), and 2 credit hours of Theatr 245/445 (1). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C or better in minor courses. Specific Requirements: • Theater Arts courses required (28 credit hours): Foundation Block: Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120 (3), 130(3). Development Block: Theatr 212 (3), 240 (3), 410 (3), and one course from each of the following two categories: Design: Theatr 320 (3), 321 (3), 322 (3), or 323 (3). History: Theatr 330 (4), 331 (4), 332 (4), 333 (3), 334 (3). Pinnacle, Interdisciplinary and Production Supplement Blocks are not Required for the Minor. PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS TEACHING MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts Teaching majors. • Theatre Arts Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. • Theatre Arts Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.50 GPA. 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Theatre Arts Teaching major must satisfy the College of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). Specific Requirements: • Because of the extensive practical knowledge necessary for a secondary teaching career, the following courses are required for the teaching major (29 credit hours): Theatr 105 (3), 110 (3), 120 (3), 130 (3), 212 (3), 240 (3), 275 (2), 323 (3), 410 (3), 471 (3). PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS HONORS General Requirements: Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 • Fulfill the requirements for one of the Theatre Arts majors, or Communication and Theatre Arts Teaching major.
