Classroom Strategies in Secondary School (4) A, W, 5 Select five modules for instruction and practice in specific teaching strategies from among such areas as laboratory method, individualizing instruction, games and simulations, inquiry and problem solving. Must be taken concurrently with Educ 462. Prerequisites: Educ 301, 303. 465. Diagnosis of Reading Skills (3) A Analysis and diagnosis of reading difficulties. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or 462. 466. Corrective Reading Methods (3) Principles and techniques for remediating reading problems. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or approval of the instructor. *470. Learning in the Schools (3) Principles of learning and management and their application to the school situation. Prerequisite: student teaching. 475. Aerospace Education (3) Concerned with knowledge, skills, attitudes and communication about aerospace activity, and the impact of air and space upon society. 476. Advanced Aerospace Education (3) Develops an understanding of the political, economic, social and educational implications of aerospace technology. *478. Practicum in Reading (4) A, 5 Application of diagnostic and corrective reading techniques with reading disabled children. Prerequisites: Educ 465 and 466. *479. Student Teaching in Special Education (6) A, W, 5 Supervised teaching in selected special education programs in an elementary or secondary school. Prerequisite: successful completion of mild/moderate Endorsement course work. 482. Adult Education (3) A survey course in adult education with emphasis on philosophy, principles, and practices as evidenced in programs and various adult education organizations. Prerequisites: professional education course work, teaching experience, or approval of the instructor. *483. Individually Prescribed Program (1-9) 5a, A, W, 5 Designed primarily for teachers fulfilling recertification requirements or personal needs. 484. Practicum in Instructional Media Services (9) Minor is not currently being offered. 485. Supervision of Student Teachers (3) The cooperating teacher-student relationship and the factors and conditions that contribute to successful student teaching experiences. *487. Directed Experiences with Students (1) A, W, 5 Directed experiences with elementary and secondary school students in cooperating schools. Students may register for one unit of credit per quarter for a maximum of three quarter hours. *488. Teaching Practicum in Elementary Education (12) 5a, A, W, 5 Student teaching experience in a public school to synthesize theory and practice. Weekly seminar on campus. Prerequisite: completion of professional core through Educ 316. 492. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Consult the quarterly class schedule for the current offering under this number. The specific title and credit authorized will appear on the student transcript. May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *495. Teaching Practicum in Secondary Education (12) A, W,S A preparation workshop followed by a public school assignment. Prerequisite: Educ 463. 496. Processes of Instructional Design (5) A systematic approach to solving instructional problems through the development of goals, objectives, instructional strategies and field testing of instructional products. The course consists of two modules, including a project contract. *498. Synthesis of the Teaching Program (3) 5a, A, W, 5 Synthesis of elementary program of studies with specific emphasis on beginning a professional career in teaching. Senior Project is required. To be taken same quarter as student teaching. *499. Senior Seminar (3) Sa, A, W, 5 Regular seminar sessions examining issues in secondary schools and curriculum. Senior Project. May be taken concurrently with Educ 495 with instructor's permission. Prerequisite: Educ 495. 511. Multicultural Education: Rationale and Curriculum Models (3) Provides a knowledge base concerning the curricular issues and need for multicultural education, and explores various curriculum models and approaches for successful implementation of multicultural education across the curriculum. 512. Issues in Multicultural Education (3) Examines the effects and impact of historical, political, social, and economic issues which affect teaching and learning for students from diverse cultural and ethnic groups. 513. Teaching for Cultural Diversity (3) Develops skills and knowledge in designing and applying effective teaching strategies to meet the interests and abilities of students from the diverse ethnic and cultural groups. *514. Language Arts in a Bilingual Setting (3) Develops skills for planning and implementing teaching strategies to enhance the teaching of oral and written language for students with limited English-speaking proficiency. 565. Principles of Special Education Assessment (3) A, 5 Apply statistical procedures and gain basic processes for collecting and analyzing observational information, criterion- referenced and environmental assessment in diagnosis and special education program development. 566. Role of the Special Educator (3) 5a, W Examination of the professional role responsibilities of the special educator in public schools, and the laws and State rules and regulations that govern the programs. 567. Applications of Special Education Assessment (3) W, Su Administer, score, and interpret norm-referenced assessment instruments, analyze in combination with data from other assessment processes, and use to determine eligibility and develop educational programs. Prerequisites: Ed 565 or comparable course. 568. Planning Instruction in Special Education (3) A, 5 Instructional programming and modification of curriculum for handicapped students served by teachers with Mild/Moderate Endorsements. 569. Classroom and Behavior Management (3) 5u, W Current issues, practices, and application of a variety of approaches for behavior change, discipline and management of the classroom environment. 570. Methods and Practices in Special Education (4) 5u, W Teaching methods, strategies, and practices widely used with elementary age level students with disabilities in Mild/Moderate special education programs. Prerequisite: Educ 565, 566, 567, 568, and Educ 306, 310 or math competency or comparable courses. 571. Applications of Special Education Methods and Practices (4) A, 5 Effective teaching methods, strategies, and practices for secondary age level students with disabilities. A cognitive learning strategies approach is emphasized. Prerequisite: successful completion of mild/moderate Endorsement course work. 577. Field Experience in Multicultural Education (3-6) Students will be provided an opportunity to gain experience in teaching and working with culturally diverse students and to apply what they have learned from the multicultural education core classes in a field based experience. 585. Foundations of Reading (3) W This course examines the principles of cognitive psychology that pertain to reading. The course explores how students comprehend and apply what they know with specific focus on the relationship between reading and learning.
