Show 26 Summer programs University field hips Family nights Parent involvement programs Upward Bound (trio program) Telephone: 801-626-6798 Location: Annex 10 Website: About Upward Bound Program • Funded by federal grants to help low income/first generation high school students from Davis and Weber counties prepare for success in post-secondary education and graduate from college • Designed to provide a pre-college educational experience for selected high school students in Davis and Weber Counties • Students must meet the federal guidelines set by the Department of Education in order to participate • Serves 75 students annually from five area high schools: Ben Lomond, Ogden, Clearfield, Layton and Northridge • Program purpose is to increase the number of non-haditional students who enter and graduate from college Academic Year Programming • Tutorial instruction in literature, composition, foreign languages, mathematics, history, computer enhancement training and general science courses • Saturday morning College Prep Program • Individual counseling for students with personal or academic concerns • Monthly social, cultural and recreational activities • ACT preparation Six-Week Summer Residential Program • Upward Bound offers a summer academic enhancement program held on the campus of Weber State University • Students live in the residence halls, attend enrichment classes and participate in social, cultural and recreational activities Student Support Services (trio program) Telephone: 801-626-7009 Location: Student Services, Suite 260 Website: weber.edu/sss Student Support Services (SSS) provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward completion of their college degree. The goal of SSS is to increase college retention and graduation rates of its participants and to help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next. The program is only open to students who have been admitted to, or are enrolled at, Weber State University About Student Support Services • Funded by a federal grant to serve students who meet one or more of the following criteria: o From a low-income family o First generation college student (parents do not have a 4 year degree) o Students with a disability • Limited to serving 285 students per year • Students must demonstrate a need for academic support before being admitted to SSS • Services continue until participant graduates with a bachelor's degree • Services are free of charge and include: o Academic tutoring in upper- as well as lower-division courses o Advise in course selection o Information on financial aid programs and resources o Education in financial literacy o Assistance in applying for graduate school o Peer and professional mentoring o Exposure to a variety of cultural events and leadership programs SmartStart Learning Community • Created to support students who are hansitioning between high school and college • Designed to meet the needs of students who are low-income and first generation college students • Includes a 7-week summer bridge program o Students get an early start on fall classes o Participants can earn as much as 6 credit hours during the summer o Group seminars allow students to get to know the campus and each other • Intensive one-on-one professional mentoring • Students continue to receive academic support during their first year at WSU • All services are provided free of charge Veterans Upward Bound (trio program) Telephone: 801-626-7173 Location: Annex 12 Website: Veterans Upward Bound provides qualified veterans academic support services that assist them in entering and succeeding in post- secondary programs of study. About Veterans Upward Bound Support Services • Funded by a federal grant to help first generation/low-income veterans in Davis, Weber and Salt Lake counties • Designed to increase the number of veterans who enter and graduate from college • Coordinates with all campus services and activities for services for veteran students Academic Skills Development, Advisement & Assistance Short-term refresher courses in math, English, and computer literacy. • Individual and small-group tutoring services for postsecondary English, math, and computer literacy courses • GED Assistance • Admissions and financial aid application and career advisement assistance • Assistance in securing support from available resources such as the Veterans Administration, veterans associations and various state and local agencies serving veterans Computer Labs Telephone: 801-626-7018 Website: Student Affairs Technology manages WSU's nine open student computer labs. These computer labs are meant to serve the general needs of all enrolled WSU students. Lab hours vary from lab to lab, but overall lab hours range from 6:30 a.m. to midnight and some labs are open seven days a week. Services provided: • Software for general student needs • Software for class-specific student needs: SPSS, Visio, Minitab, Adobe Suite • Apple Macintosh (mruung both Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX via dual booting) and Windows PCs are available • Wireless, Black/White, and Color Printing • Computer classrooms are available for reservations in some labs - call or e-mail coordinator Weber State University 2011 -2012 Catalog |
