Show Hoover Watches DevelopmentsThe president, he said, had gone the limit in the exercise of patience before he used force.I believe he would have been derelict in his duty if he had not acted. From early in the day until late tonight President Hoover kept his finger on developments. His directions to call upon the troops followed advices from District of Columbia authorities that they could not control the situation.A pitiful and in part belligerent procession of veterans made their way from the Anacostia camp as the fires spread. Simultaneously, with their horses prancing and their sabers drawn, troopers moved slowly along the river's edge and deployed around the main body of the camp.Twoscore Fires BlazingTwoscore fires were blazing as the troops moved on after having given the bonus seekers an extra hour to evacuate it.Almost all the ex soldiers were out and on the move at 11 30 p. m. Some of them halted momentarily to look back over the flaming area which for two months or more had been their home.Women and children had been moved out several hours before.Infantry slashed in from the river bank, laying down a heavy screen of tear gas that rolled across the field back toward the town, enveloping all the bonus shacks.Veterans and spectators alike ran at top speed, weeping and wiping their eyes.Little DisorderThere was no disorder as the flames swept on.Many national guard tents, under bond to the District of Columbia police, went up in the blaze.Firemen laid a line of hose to play on the tents and estimated they could save about one-quarter.The gas bombs were thrown from the windward side of the camp, the infantrymen making a flank movement to the rear. It only took a few (Continued on Page Three) (Column One)Will Rogers Says:BEVERLY HILLS, Cal., July 28 See where Mr. Hoover and almost his entire cabinet held a meeting to decide where to move the bonus army. The Democrats are holding a meeting to decide where to move Mr. Hoover and his cabinet. Everybody wants to do something with somebody else.I see by this mornings paper where living has decreased 7 per cent since December. In figuring these statistics and, by the way, who is it that figures up all these fool things? Well, anyhow, you might live that much cheaper, but that don't figure in the worry. If worry is worth anything, we never was living as expensive.Yours,Will Rogers |
