Show Elementary/Secondary Education Composite Programs PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • See Elementary Education requirement sheets. • Admission and Retention Standards requirements for the College of Education. • One 30-hour or two 15-hour content area specializations, or a teaching minor and one 15-hour content area specialization is required. • Elementary Education majors must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher in all college work and in professional education courses or 3.25 GPA on last 45 credit hours. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division education credit (courses numbered 300 and above). Specific Requirements: • Support courses required: Commun HU102 (3), 107 (3) or 307 (3), or equivalent; MathEd 203 (3), 204 (3) 205 (3); Educ 200 (4), 233 (4), 365 (3); Engl 330 (3); six credit hours from Art 350 (3), Music 169 (3), 320 (3), Theatr 460 (3), Educ 343 (3); PE 362 (3) or 363 (3) or 364 (3); Chfam SS150(5). • Professional Education courses required: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 306 (6), 308(3), 310 (3), 311 (3), 313 (3), 314 (3), 316 (3), 488 (12), 498 (3). • Admission to teacher education is required prior to enrollment in education classes beyond Educ 195. • Note: Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. (See the Secondary Education section for teaching minors.) 30-Hour or 15-Hour Content Specialities: General Science Social Sciences Reading Fine Arts Mathematics Special Education/Mild Moderate Language Arts/Communications Dance Theatre Arts Multicultural Education 15-Hour Content Specialities : Art Music Physical Education Foreign Languages Child Development PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEPARTMENTAL HONORS A candidate desiring to receive Elementary Education Departmental Honors is expected to be an exemplary student. He/she must: • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Be enrolled in the Weber State Honors Program and complete at least ten (10) hours of General Honors courses. • Fill the requirements of the Elementary Education major. • Take at least 21 credit hours in the professional education core, education support courses, or graduate courses for Honors credit. The following undergraduate courses may be considered by the student and his committee for his course of study: Ed 306, 308, 310, 311, 313, 314, 316, 320, 339, 343, 365,465,466, 498, 566, 567, 568, 569, 570, 571, 585. The student desiring Honors credit should seek permission from the Department Chair and the Honors Committee Chairperson. The student will then be assigned an Education Honors Committee to help design his/her course of study. The student must have a signed Course of Study Agreement prior to enrolling in any course for Education Honors. Courses designated as Honors Courses for a student will be assigned letter grades rather than Credit/No Credit grades generally assigned for the professional core in Elementary Education. Content in the Education courses will be different and more challenging for Honors students than are courses designed for average students. PROGRAM: SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION PROGRAM General Requirements: • WSU Core Requirements (see index). • General Education Requirements (see index). • See Secondary Education requirement sheets. • Admission and Retention Standards requirements for the College of Education. • The academic teaching major and teaching minor (referred to previously under Subject Specialization) must consist of not less than 45 and 24 quarter hours respectively, or a composite major of at least 68 hours. • The teaching major and teaching minor should be in subjects taught in Utah public secondary schools. Either the major or minor must be a subject which Utah secondary schools are required to teach (those marked with an asterisk do not satisfy this second requirement-see below). • The student preparing to teach in either junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional and academic specialization. Specific Requirements: • 39 credit hours for certification. • Educ 300 and 400 classes are open only to students who have been admitted to Teacher Education. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) • Education courses required (to be completed in sequence): Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 301 (4), 303 (3), 305 (3), 316 (3), 462 (4), 463 (4), 495 (12), 499 (3). • Support courses required: Commun HU 102 (3); Educ 365 (3); choose one of the following: Chfam SS150 (5), Psych 314 (3), Chfam 450 (3). Teaching majors and minors in the social sciences must also take Educ 450 (3). • Note: Education 300 and 400 classes are open only to students admitted to Teacher Education. PROGRAM: SPECIAL EDUCATION MINOR Secondary students who want to teach mild and moderately handicapped students in public schools can complete the course work in the Special Education Minor and receive the Special Education Mild/Moderate Endorsement from the Utah State Office of Education. This endorsement qualifies the holder to be employed in this field at any level from kindergarten through grade twelve. The preparation covers instructional methods, materials selection, diagnostic procedures and curriculum design. General requirements: • An overall GPA of 3.00 and admission to the Teacher Education program is required. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Students holding Elementary, Secondary or Early Childhood Certification who are seeking the minor must make application to the Teacher Education Department (Certification Office) for admission to the Special Education program. Interview with Special Education Director is required. (See admission requirements to Teacher Education.) Specific Requirements: A minimum of 35 credit hours plus student teaching for the endorsement. • Completion of Education 365 or equivalent. • Completion of Education 462 or equivalent. • The following courses are required: Ed 565 (3), 566 (3), 567 (3), 568 (3), 569 (3), 570 (4), 571 (4), 459 (3), 465 (3) (or equivalent course), 585 (3). • Electives (choose 1 course from the following): Ed 466 (3), Ed 478 (4), Eng 331 (3). Other electives may be appropriate, but must have prior approval. TEACHING MAJORS AND MINORS The student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's academic (teaching) major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a faculty member in the student's academic (teaching) minor. The student should also select an adviser from the professional education staff to help in meeting requirements of the College of Education and the requirements for the Utah teaching certificate. COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. The Student's adviser will be a faculty member in the department of the student's composite teaching major. Advisement help should be sought as needed from a staff member in the student's academic (teaching) minor.
