CHADBURN The stream ran rocky down to the lake, and the water swept over the rocks with a high spray. The stream ran a crooked course from high on the mountain. To follow the stream up became impossible after a mile above the lake because thick bushes bridged completely over its bed. The stream crashed down the mountain with an unusually loud noise, at least for its size. George, the man who now washed in the stream fifty yards in from the lake, figured this was because of some echo effect of the mountain. George finished washing his face in the stream and stood up, letting water drip from his face to his red and black checkered shirt. The water splotched the red checks but seeped in and became hardly noticeable on the black ones. He wiped his hands on his levis and then dried his face on his shirt sleeves. As he stretched, the early morning sunlight reflected from the lake and hit him full in the face. He squinted his eyes and stretched harder. His muscles bulged out the arms and chest of the checkered shirt. He walked the hundred and fifty yards back to his camp. His camp lay about a hundred yards inland from the small, beach-like area where he could always land a small trout, occasionally a large one. He checked the the lake and picked On the end that he had cleaned before fish from the line carry them. fire he had built earlier, then went down to up a red line that he had staked into the ground. pulled from the water hung three fish which he he went to the stream. He went over to his bag and, with his fish-free hand, dug through toilet paper and clean shirts to get at his frying pan. He felt the pan and brought it out of the duffle bag. 18 19 |
