The classroom today is a society. You all sit in the same room studying the same thing. You listen to the same teacher and are expected to draw the same conclusions from his lectures. You go to school because you go to school, and most parents and teachers would slap you down if you thought maybe there was a better way to spend your time. Materials are limited to the same textbooks and encyclopedias. No one likes doing every chapter the same old way: Read it, answer the questions, take the test. And an occasional report is supposed to raise your. morale. It doesn’t. But an educational film, as you know from bitter experience, is usually half an hour of watching bad actors trying to reconstruct events which you know could not have possibly happened as portrayed. How do you like being in a crop of Believers? Every time you take a test and simply supply the correct answer instead of writing about something you’ve studied or working out the problems your own way, you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Believer. You are expected to give back to the teacher what he’s been saying instead of finding your own examples. Is this thinking? To learn something new is the sovereign cure for most of what troubles the soul and ails the digestion, and if you don’t pick up the habit in school, you’re not likely to get it later. Before I commit myself I want to ask questions, read the works of some “experts” on the matter; then I’ll contemplate both sides of the fence. I don’t want to be jumping into the wrong pasture. I want the experience of having a mind that’s open—(but not to the changing winds). I demand these things of you. I know I’ll make other demands, but one day soon, you’ll make demands of me and I'l try my hardest to fill them. I know I must rely on myself. Even though other people can and try to understand, in the long run, I am all I have. If I can’t justify my own actions, I don’t see how I can live without myself. I must do the things I want to do and I must not become a hypocrite. I may be looking at the world with rose-colored lenses, but no matter what color lenses I’m looking through, they’re still my eyes.
