Show The parade from 700 South to the Marriott Park was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. A mis-communication caused it to start early. There were plenty of decorated tricycles, bicycles, wagons, and floats to cheer on. Winners were: First place, Spencer Okey and Friends (Rock Band Float); 2nd place, Aaron Greer; 3rd place, Toad's Mini Golf and Arcade; Most Effort, Will Holley and sons; Least Effort, Sheriff's Office/Fire Department, and People's Choice, Kerry Gibson (because he gave out popsicles!) Hamburgers and hot dogs were cooked and disbursed by the City Council, with many hungry customers to purchase their wares, beginning at 11:00 a.m. In the afternoon a baby contest was held. Parker Crookston, son of Neal and Jamie Crookston, was named King of the 1 to 2 years division. Cody Arnell, son of Nathan and Michelle Arnell, was King of those under one year. Maycee Westergard, daughter of Sam and Molly Westergard, was selected Queen. Maycee Fillpot, daughter of Brad and Amy Fillpot, was 1st Princess, with James Katherine Roundy, daughter of Cortney and Kayla Deru-Roundy, as 2nd Princess. Among the games and contests during the day were the Giant Slide, the Candy Cannon, and several Pie Eating Contests with numerous ties. Among the winners were Greg Lewis, Matt Pittman of the Sheriff's Department, and Shay Holley. Our reporter said Shay cheated, but he said he won! Lots of kids showed remarkable speed and capacity in their pie eating. A raffle was held this year, with Lisa Panter the winner of the grand prize, a swing. Winner of the IPOD was Michelle Hodson. Mayor Keith Butler pronounced the celebration a big success, thanking all who helped and were involved. When it was time to clean up, everyone joined in and assisted. An Evening of Music at the Park was held this year on July 19, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Residents were invited to enjoy music, local talent and socialize with friends and family. The evening featured the Nelson Family from Roy. Entertainment by Lenore Spencer was also scheduled, but had to be cancelled as she and her husband Wesley were seriously injured in an automobile accident on July 12, 2008. Hannah Brandley filled in to lead those present in a sing-along. A beautiful, but dry month, ended in our community with a special activity for children on Halloween. The Pioneer Post, October issue, announced that the city would participate in a community Trunk-or-Treat to be held at the L.D.S. cultural hall parking lot, located at 250 North 1500 West. The city donated $100.00. It started at 6:00 p.m. Chili, donuts and hot chocolate were served. Prizes were given for the best decorated trunks. Winners were David and Sherry Wadman, first place, Rance and Tiffany Christensen, second, and Mike and Debbie Draper, third place. From ail accounts, and pictures available, it is hard to say who had the most fun, children or adults. Next year the event will probably be moved to the city's parking lot. The First United Methodist Church sponsored a 5K run on November 1, 2008, which was a bright, warm fall day. The run was plotted through BDO, beginning and ending just west of the nearest depot warehouse to 1200 West. It was under the direction of Marty Smith (who has run the Boston Marathon), and Ray Christian. About 30 runners signed up for the event. The city was well represented in the winners circle, as residents Michael Hancock finished first, with Jonathan Spencer, second and Zachary Spencer, third. Winners in their respective age categories were Brian Snyder, Quentin Carter, Michael Hancock, Jonathan Spencer, and Brady Spencer (the youngest entrant). Women winners included First, Toby Nishikawa, Second, Brandi Lierd and Third, Marty Smith. Annie Spencer won in her age category. Pastor Alane Currier Griggs, and Associate Pastor Michelle Perry, welcomed participants and spectators to the event. Many prizes were awarded to the runners by drawing. Vern Blair was in charge of the chili cook-off, with Mayor Keith Butler and Greg Lewis as two of the judges. Karleen Warner was a chili entrant from our community. Throughout the morning, the band, Evidence of Grace, entertained. Thanks to all those who sponsored this fun community event. Marriott-Slaterville saw a white Christmas, and residents not only enjoyed the beauty of our white covered surroundings, but looked forward to events in the city. 18 |
