Show Madalyn Taylor (Cont'd) began playing piano at age 7. She says her mom strictly enforced practice time, but her dad made her want to practice. "He needed an accompanist," Taylor said. "He would stick his head in the lid of the grand piano and say, 'Play me something.'" Taylor accompanied her junior-high and high-school choirs, eventually being named Roy High School's Sterling Scholar in music. She attended Weber State University on a music scholarship. Taylor's connections with voice instructors opened the door for Jones to begin voice training at age 13. Taylor and her husband Robert, a die-hard country music fan with a preference for Merle Haggard, often wondered how their children would turn out. In Jones' case, she turned out a little Mozart and a little Merle. But Jones didn't really get her boost into the world of recording and albums until her family needed a way to deal with the grief of losing a 17-year-old son and brother in 1999. One year after the accident that claimed her brother Josh's life, Jones presented her father with a CD she had recorded locally, a gift for his birthday. "It became Robert's Josh-therapy," Taylor said. "Working with Melissa became his obsession." Robert has been at Jones' side throughout her music career, which has included opening for Keith Urban. Another brother, Jake, became an inspiration by serving on the front lines in Iraq, a tour that earned him two Purple Hearts after he was hit twice with roadside bombs. "My family is having experiences most people never get in their whole lives," Jones said. "Sometimes I wonder how we all got here." Taylor seems to be taking it in stride. As her daughter makes her rounds at some two dozen military bases across the nation, promoting her CD, Taylor is content to care for Jones' five children. That, and practice for upcoming international piano competitions. Murray Quin and Donna Murray of Marriott-Slaterville celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner.
