Show Senior Health Connection newsletter Intermountain McKay-Dei Hospital Center October 2008 ABC's of Breast Cancer: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month This year in America, more than 211,000 women and 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95 percent. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years or older have never had a mammogram. 70 percent of all breast cancers are found through self-exams: however, not all lumps are detectable by touch. Only eight of ten lumps are cancerous, but should always be checked by a doctor. The evaluation of men with breast masses is similar to that of women, including mammography. While a history of breast cancer in the family may lead to increased risk, most breast cancers are diagnosed in women with no family history of the diease. There are many risk factors that may contribute to breast cancer, some of which include: family history, high bone density, poor diet, obesity and postmenopausal hormone use.
