Show ERIN HOOLEY/Standard-Examiner Above, Roger Miller gets a chukar from Zoe the dog during a training session near his home in Ogden on Friday. Animal Concepts Foundation has a nonprofit program that trains dogs that need to be adopted and places them in good homes. Miller has 25 years of experience in training airport security, search and rescue, and hunting dogs. Top, the snout of a bird dog pokes through Miller's trailer. Man prepares dogs for adoption with new skills training By SAM COOPER Standard-Examiner staff scooper@standard.net MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE Quincy, a 4-year-old black Lab, bounds through the dry grass with his nose swinging from side to side. The dog's tail wags furiously as several other dogs watch from kennels in a nearby trailer bay and whine in desperate encouragement. Twenty paces behind, Roger Miller stalks through the field after him with a .28-gauge shotgun resting on his hip. Quincy sniffs, then freezes with a rigid back, eyes glued firmly on a partridge AUDIO SLIDESHOW: See bedded more at StandardNet down in the grass in front of him. Miller quietly walks up beside the dog, cocking the shotgun. With a low whistle and a flurry of wings, a partridge bursts out of the grass in front of the dog as Miller raises the gun and, with a loud "crack," sends the bird spiraling to the ground. "Here, Quince! Come!" Miller shouts as the dog bounces after the fallen fowl. "Labs typically don't point," Miller says, as Quincy drops the bird into his hand. "Sometimes you'll get Labs that do point. There are actually people trying to breed pointing Labs, but it's something he's done on his own" He slips the bird into one of the pockets of his hunting jacket as he talks, walking back to his trailer where Zoe, a German wirehair pointer, and several other dogs bark excitedly. "Typically a Lab will just rush in on the bird and bust it out." Miller, who trains dogs for a living, admits he's got a soft spot for man's Doggie Vocation Rehab October 29, 2008 75 |
