Utah's own Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire will be back this May and organizers are looking for faeries, criers, peasants and more to fill their whimsical world. The first of two auditions for strolling performers was held Saturday at the Weber County Library Southwest Branch in Roy. "Everyone wants to be a princess or knight, and it's a good place to do that for a day," said Wendy Abel, one of the guild directors. Another guild director, Jenni Lou Oakes, said she welcomes all comers and said no one should fear being rejected. The actors will, after all, be "playing for hat," or volunteering. "They don't have to have experience in anything," Oakes said. "We'll help them develop characters based on what they're good at.... In community theater, you're cast in a role. Here, you can develop your role." Actors who can sing, play a musical instrument, juggle or have any other talent are asked to demonstrate what they have to offer at the next audition, on Saturday. The festival will have jousting, belly dancers, a puppet company, many food vendors and an enchanted garden for kids. "That's our main focus, to entertain the children," Abel said. All persons are eligible to try out, and families can audition as a unit. Actors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during auditions and while on the fair grounds. 31 Audition 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jewett Center for Performing Arts, Room 202, Westminster College, 1840 S. 1300 East, Salt Lake City For more information, email countryrhoades@msn. com The Faire 10 a.m. to dusk, May 9-11 and May 16-18, 3105 W.
