Show The Pioneer Post Volume X Issue 9 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter September Mayor's Message Recently, you may have noticed while reading the newspaper, as I have noticed, many cities and towns are increasing property taxes. There is a general shortfall in revenue for many communities as the country's economic woes hit home towns. Many of you have asked me or may be concerned how our community is faring in these financially tightening times. Realize that many cities and counties have planned their budgets for years never anticipating a decline in building permit and development revenues. Now, there is a significant decline in these revenues. Fortunately, Marriott-Slaterville City does not use that budget planning practice because, in my opinion, that fiscal management is dangerous and inevitably leads to tax increases. My budget policy anticipates a potential for recession and sustains our General Plan. By anticipating a occasional recession, our community does not rely heavily on building permit revenue. As such, when building revenues decline we are not harmed. Also, my budget policy holds development to the General Plan which keeps development from over-pressuring our infrastructure resulting in costly upgrades and potential tax hikes. After years of poor planning, many cities now face maintaining expensive or inadequate infrastructure with depleting revenue. That is not our case because our Planning Commission, Council, and residents hold development to the infrastructure planned in the General Plan. Our General Plan was approved by our Council after considerable input from our residents and the public. It is expected to be the governing blueprint of the community. Take comfort that your community's budget is doing well. I am proud to say that Marriott-Slaterville City still has no property tax, and none is expected._ I oral Updates The new park behind the city building is progressing quickly. Some residents have donated a tree on behalf of a loved one, or a resident of the community. If you would like to make a donation for a tree in the park behind city building, please contact Bill or Becky at 801-627-1919. Demolition of the old bowery and construction on the new bowery at Slaterville Park will soon begin. If you are planning to use a park this fall, please consider using Marriott Park to avoid the construction at Slaterville Park. To schedule the park call Becky at 801-627-1919, and make your reservation. The council recently approved the park committee's recommended rules for the parks. The new rules prohibit ATVs in the park, and limit skateboards and roller blades to designed areas. Also, permission is required before certain activities like fireworks, golfing, shooting, and archery. Alcohol, littering, vandalism, animals at-large have always been prohibited. At the request of the health department, smoking is now prohibited at parks, mass gatherings, and all bus stops. PLANNING COMMISSION TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 - 7:00 P.M. 1.
