Show Obituaries 2008 Marvin Hyrum Saunders Marriott-Slaterville - Marvin Hyrum Saunders passed away peacefully with his family around him, October 27, 2008. He was born April 13, 1921 in Ogden, Utah the fourth of twelve children born to Edward Thomas and Marcia Ann Slater Saunders. He was reared in Ogden and educated in Ogden City schools obtaining an Associate Degree in Engineering from Weber College in 1941. He was the recipient of the Eagle Badge Award in Scouting during this period of time. Additional education includes a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah, and he completed all of the requirements for a Masters Degree in Applied Statistics from Utah State University except for the Thesis. Marvin married Marie Bingham May 5, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they have reared five wonderful children: Robert Marvin (Joyce) Saunders of Green River, WY, Tamara Saunders (Dan) Hobbs of Pocatello, ID, Jill Saunders (Anthony) Yazzie, Douglas Alan Saunders of Salt Lake City and Constance Saunders (David) Duffin of Sandy; from these the family has grown to 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. After completing Jr. College, Marvin took a job with the Army Air Corps in June 1941 as an Aircraft Radio Repairman at Hill Field. He was transferred to Mc-Cord Field, Washington to help establish a radio repair facility at that field. May 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet and was told to go back to work until he received a notice to report for active duty. This notice was later received and he reported for active duty December 1, 1942 to Yale University where he was enrolled in the School of Aviation Armament from which he graduated and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant May 5, 1943. Later he participated in the Air Offensive of Japan; from the Pacific Island of Guam. He was discharged June 1946 and later retired from the US Air Force Reserve, after 28 years of military duty, at the rank of LT. Colonel. After his college graduation Marvin worked for five different organizations; excelling in each one. While working for Westing-house he received two important patent awards for designs required in the development, during the 1950s, of the US Nuclear Navy. Later while working at Hill Air Force Base he received an Outstanding Performance Rating Award from Brigadier General Howard W. Moore and other credits and awards including the annual Management Achievement Award. During his entire life Marvin has always been active and engaged in many church callings; including Group Leader on the Island of Guam, Elders Quorum President, Bishops Councilor (three times), High Priest Assistant Group Leader, High Councilman and Temple Ordinance Worker. Marvin had a beautiful tenor voice and used it singing many tenor solos and duets with his wife, whom he referred to lovingly as his Sweet Marie. He was also a very good basketball player, playing in the All LDS Church Basketball Tournament five years and making Honorable Mention on the All Church Team one of those years. He was a dedicated father and husband and cherished by his wife and family. He loved spending time with them. His grandchildren were a highlight in his life. He had a spontaneous nature when it came to singing and could often be heard uplifting others with his beautiful voice. He had a love for nature and the outdoors and spent many a summer fishing and camping with his immediate and extended family. He will be missed by his wife and children. Marvin is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; greatgrandchildren and 10 siblings: Anna Easthope, Lawrence Saunders, Leland Saunders, Marva May Elgren, Ilene Smith, Lou Jean Wiggins, Glen Saunders, Carl Saunders, Darrell Saunders and Marcia Lindsey. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Edward. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Ogden 4th Ward Chapel, 21st and Jefferson, with Darrell Saunders officiating. Family and friends may call Thursday, October 30th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden and on Saturday at the church prior to the service from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com Norman Pyke Bowles Slaterville - Norman Pyke Bowles, 78, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Aspen Care Center in Ogden with his wife of 58 years by his side. He was born February 2, 1930 in Ogden, Utah a son of Alva Pyke and Mariam Spackman Bowles. He was raised in Harrisville, Utah and attended Weber High School. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps. Norman was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. On September 8, 1950, he married Jeannine Beck Bowles, and together they had three lovely children. In his younger years, Norman enjoyed fishing and camping. In his latter years, he enjoyed sitting on his porch swing with his beloved daughter, Kathleen. Norman will be remembered for his calm and quiet manner. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, of Slaterville; son, Kevin Scott Bowles (Tina) of Idaho; daughters Dianna Jean Gooch (Bill) of Harrisville; Kathleen Bowles who resides at Wide Horizons Care Center in Ogden; and his brother, Allen Bowles of Ogden. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters. A viewing will be held at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street, on Monday, November 17, at 10 A.M. followed by a graveside service to begin at 11 A.M.
