Show Marriott-Slaterville History April 2008 The council approved the expenditure of $5,850.00 for consulting engineers Caldwell, Richards, and Sorensen, to prepare a pavement analysis on 400 North and prepare the transportation element of the general plan. They will provide an opinion of the road pattern master plan for important local roads within the city boundaries and deliver a map showing the schematic format of existing and proposed roads, with cross sections for each type of road. President Dennis Ilium feels 400 North needs maintenance, and the evaluation of the road surface, with recommendations, by an engineer is the best way for the administration to know what maintenance is needed. The basic design of a city hail park wedding area, with trees and plant material, as recommended by the park committee, was discussed. The Forestry Commission will evaluate and make recommendations for substitute choices. Both Mr. Morris and Councilman Rob Smout commended the excellent work of the committee. The council approved the expenditure of $11,432.00 for the proposed area, as part of the Arbor Day Celebration. Mayor Butler said the First United Methodist Church in the city is completed, and in May the church will host a barbecue for city residents. The first service was scheduled for April 26, 2008. An open house was held on April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m., which concluded with a cornerstone-laying ceremony. A formal consecration service will be held on May 18, at 4 p.m. Trent Meyerhoffer was welcomed as a new city employee. Mayor Butler also advised that Deputy Brent Fowers arranged for inmate crews to help clean up the parks and garbage around the city. Deputy Fowers and Mr. Morris were thanked by Mayor Butler, for their recent mock table-top disaster with the Emergency Management Program. The Front Runner transportation system will start operation between Salt Lake City and Ogden on April 26, and anyone may ride it during the first three days at no cost. Mr. Morris advised that a new IRS building may be built next to the IFA building on 12th Street. Mr. Smout said the speed limit sign on 2550 West is obscured by trees and needs to be moved to a more visible area. He also advised that the fireplace at the Slaterville Park is not usable and needs to be closed off. The staff noted that there is a graffiti problem at the Marriott Park. FEMA funding in the amount of $448,000, to the Weber Fire District, will be used to improve fire stations and equipment in the district. Our city is one of the areas served by the district. Bits and Pieces Dennis Wirick, of our city, was featured in an article in the Standard Examiner, on April 19, 2008, entitled "Water-wise and Eco-friendly." Over 3 years he has killed all his grass, and replaced it with xeriscape, based on ideas from the Conservation Garden Park in West Jordan. Melvin and Joan Meyerhoffer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. They were married on April 22, 1958. Teachers for The Standard Examiner annual "Apple for the Teacher Awards" for 2008, included Sherry Morris, Sand Ridge Junior High. 123 |
