Show 19, 2002. Planning Commissioners terms expire at the end of 2002. Carl Parker would like to remain on the commission, but Carolyn Deru and Keith Slater do not desire another term. In November Mayor Butler appointed Carl Parker for another term and Kelly Aiken to replace Mrs. Deru. The Planning Commission became fully staffed on December 19, 2002, when the City Council unanimously approved Mayor Butler's appointment of Kent Meyerhoffer to fill the remaining vacancy. Mr. Meyerhoffer has a genuine interest in this community in which he lived all his life. Council members consented to these appointments. Mayor Butler asked for the advice and consent of the Council on the appointment of Ken Martin as Community Development Director. Mr. Martin plans to retire from North Ogden with about 30 years of experience in planning, zoning, building permits, inspections, and transportation. As Community Development Director, Mr. Martin would perform the mandated EPA Phase II Storm Water functions. He would also manage license enforcement, building permits, plan checks, inspections, excavation permits, zoning and planning matters. He may represent the city at meetings with UDOT, WFRC, EPA and other meetings as needed. He would supervise two part-time employees, Steve Mecham and Randy Phipps. He would start full time with the city in March, but would begin in February on his own time contacting businesses about EPA fees and measures the city must take due to the federal mandate. The Council approved the appointment, subject to approval of negotiation of Mr. Martin's salary. In December, Mr. Ken Martin met with the City Council and expressed his enthusiasm at beginning employment in March 2003. He has worked on a contract basis for the city for several years. Councilman Orvil Holley reported a recent incident where someone was dumping dirt near a creek in the community and tracking mud on the road. Mr. Martin went to the scene and ensured compliance with the law. Mr. Holley commended him for his prompt action. The Council voted unanimously to approve the negotiated salary as required by Resolution 2002-J. Ogden City has informed the City that the office must be moved from the present building in the near future. There are some options which are being considered, including BDO Building 5-X, and the main building of Cape Construction near 12th Street. The annual Christmas Party to honor volunteers and members of boards and commissions in the community was held on December 19, 2002, beginning at 7:00 p.m.. A special thank-you goes to Becky Burt who organized the party and prepared the light meal. About 50-60 people attended the party and enjoyed visiting and the refreshments. The City can be proud of many of the young people from our community. Cameron Koford was named the MVP for his participation in the University of Utah basketball game against Air Force during the 2001 -2002 season. Billy Green was honored by the Standard Examiner for his academic and wrestling achievements. He also received the Wendy's Heisman Award for the state, and is Student Body President at Fremont High School. Travis Thompsen and Phillip Ito placed in the state tennis tournament in the spring. Heather Holley was chosen as the Weber County Dairy Princess on April 20, 2002. In June, Kylee Deru and Joshua Dimick were presented the Great Grizzly A ward from Rocky Mountain Junior High, as the outstanding students of the school. Lindsey Slater, although still at Rocky Mountain Junior High, is a member of the cross country track team at Fremont and was instrumental in their winning the State title in October. Marcie Spencer is also on the track team. Lindsey Slater was also named the Elks Club Student of the Month for December. Our community has several fine school teachers as residents. Among the teachers honored by the Standard Examiner with their "Apple for the Teacher Award" in May were Joe Deru, who teaches at Farr West Elementary, Will Holley, who teaches at Fremont High School, and Sherry Morris who teaches English at Sand Ridge Junior High School. We are proud of the young people from our community who graduated from Fremont High School on June 4, 2002, and congratulate them on their achievements, and wish them well in their future endeavors. As we look back on another year, we see successes, problems, achievements, great efforts expended, unexpected accomplishments and challenges, special associations and events in our City, and we can sincerely say to residents, volunteers, and city officials, "Well done." 12 |
