Show The Pioneer Post Volume IV Issue 1 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter January 2002 195 West 400 North, MSC, UT 84404 (627-1919, Fax 627-1880) State of the City Address Keith H. Butler, Mayor As we begin the new year, I thank you for your confidence in electing me to another term. i will do everything in my power to faithfully execute this office. This year brings with it new goals and aspirations. Let me first tell you that the city is doing well and is financially sound. For the third year I am again pleased to say there is no city property tax in Marriott-Slaterville, nor do i expect any. This is thanks to our wonderful volunteers, council, and staff. However, there are other problems that this community faces, namely crime. Our good Sheriff, Brad Slater, has kept crime under control. The city has an interlocal agreement with the County Sheriff to provide public safety services, and this arrangement has worked well. In fact, the city also has a Community Resource Officer to assist us in areas of specific concern. But it is alarming to see the number of incidents in the community continue to grow year after year. To open your eyes on my concerns let me show you the following statistics: 2001 Incident Report for MSC - Weber County Sheriff Description No. Description No. 911 Unknown Call 4 Abandoned Vehicle 9 Assault with gun 1 Alarm 6 False Alarm 44 Medical Assist 25 Animal Problem/Livestock 26 Alcohol Offense 17 Warrant for Arrest 33 Simple Assault 5 Agency Assist 47 Attempt to Locate 1 Burglary 9 Citizen Dispute 16 Citizen Assist 110 Criminal Mischief 6 CSI Evidence 1 Controlled Substance 56 (Drugs) Curfew/Loitering 2 Comm. It represents around 5% of the total calls to the Weber Sheriff County in 2001. In 1990, the number of calls in the community was around 400. For 2002, we project that number to be 1,400, which is a 20% increase from 2001. 1 believe that to slow the increase in crime residents need to be more involved. Therefore, 1 am encouraging the Neighborhood Watch and McGruff programs. 1 intend to appoint several residents to head these and other community safety and emergency programs. If we, as a community, state, and nation learned anything in 2001, it is that we are vulnerable. Now, we need to address that vulnerability and compensate for it. 97 |
