Show January 7, 2002 (Cont'd) Robert Covey, Marriott-Slaterville City, is a Valued Employee of Cross Western Store The saddle maker, Robert Covey, is one of only a few saddle makers left. He sculpts leather into works of art with tools that date back generations. "The luckiest thing about staying here is just a good, loyal customer base," Craig said. "There really hasn't been a reason to come downtown for two or three years. We're kind of a destination point." With an original wooden cutout of a "whoopie girl," the 1934 symbol of the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo, still dis-played near the entrance of Cross Western Store, it's evident that the business has been a destination for its customers for some time. "We're the old, old store," Ken said. "We'd buy an old antique instead of a new showcase. But then our customers are kind of a class in themselves. They want to come in with mud on their shoes. They don't feel bad about coming in with mud on their shoes. We've been there long enough that we've done it all and seen it all." ALAN MURRAY/Standard-Examiner Cross Western employee and saddle maker Robert Covey works on some shoeing chaps at the Cross Western Store in Ogden. 113 |
