Show June 11, 2002 Statewide Problems Plague Our City Also Proposed nuclear waste routes through Utah Potential impact on Utah of a nuclear accident according to the Environmental Working Group: Schools within 1 mile of the proposed route in Utah - 264. Hospitals within 1 mile -10. Fatal tractor-trailer wrecks in Utah, 1994 to 2000 - 218 - 94 occurred on interstates. In Utah there were 779 train accidents from 1990 through 2001, a rate of 65 per year. This includes 283 derail-ments, 67 train collisions, and 329 accidents involving a train hitting (or being hit by) a car, truck or person. People in Utah that live within 1 mile of a nuclear transportation route -747,700. Nuclear waste shipments in Utah over the 38-year life of the project: -If by truck: 91,506 -If by train: 16,846 Nuclear waste in the country now -45,662 metric tons. Potential truck route Potential rail route Source: Environmental Working Group Standard-Examiner June 12, 2002 Smoke from grass fire fills sky MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - The Top of Utah joined the fiery ranks Tuesday night as rising smoke from a grass fire in Marriott-Slaterville hid the afternoon sun and reddened the sunset. The fire began in the dry fields near 500 South and 2700 West around 6 p.m. and firefighters were still on the scene three hours later. The fire covered a large rural area, running from 200 South to 500 South. Traffic was blocked and directed around the fire, where firefighters sought to control the blaze and protect barns and trees in the area. More details were not available at press time. 40 |
